Thanks for the replies...I will keep doing it the way I have been.
Which is???? My craftsman log splitter hydraulic tank has a threaded checker rod (Instruction manual does not give clarification) and I've always checked it by threading in first then reading. Haven't destroyed anything if 20 years; so whatever works for you.

The briggs on my riding mower says to screw it-in to check level.

as mentioned, won't make a big difference either way on a Kawi v twin. as long as you measure on level ground.. i go unscrewed & don't allow level to go above (or of course below) that.

i've read where small diesel engines are not as forgiving on oil overfilling b/c of injector pump, but cannot verify on that. good luck, just keep servicing w/quality oil & filters as you are doing & keep yer blades sharp for the season, good job
