When I first started using tractors (shortly after the Crimean War) it was COMMON KNOWLEDGE that for traveling, you never let a heavy 3pt load just hang there bouncing on the hydraulics. Positive chain or brace travel limiters were always recommended. Even my Mercruiser I/O has a mechanical brace to hold the drive up for trailering.

The simplest brace-type travel limiters are flat bars with 7/8" pin holes in them. They attach to the top link pin point on the tractor, and to each arm at the implement. Of course these prevent up and down motion - chains would limit down travel only. On my Ford 8n, I used fixed-length braces to hold a 100-gallon sprayer tank - around 750 pounds when full.
