I have a Woods GTC 52-2 Tiller, and need to change the oil. Does anyone know how to 1, check the oil, and 2 how much oil is takes?

There is a plug on the gear box, a plastic plug with a gasket on the top of the transmission, and a drain plug on the bottom of the transmission, neither have a "rod" for measuring as the manual describes - see pictures.

I got this new with my Kubota BX24, 've used the tiller every year for 5 years, for a total of maybe 100 hours. Probably should change the oil!

If you don't have any leaks. Drain each case individualy and measure the amount. Replace the exact same amount into each case. This should get you close, if not exact. Hope this helps.

I also have a 60" reverse rotation woods tiller. It looks the same as yours. On the back of the gear box there should be a plug. Remove it and drain the oil. You have to tip the tiller upward so the hole is facing down. Once it is drained, tilt the tiller back to normal position. Remove the plug on top of the gear box and pour the appropriate oil in until it starts to come out of the hole on the back. Once that happens, you have the correct amount of oil in the gear box. Put both plugs back in. For the chain guard box you remove the metal plug at the bottom and again tilt the tiller until all the oil drains out. Tilt the tiller back to normal, remove the plastic cap on top and again fill with the appropriate oil until it starts to flow out of the bottom hole. Then replace both caps and you are ready for action.

this is how I did mine, before I found my drain plug on the top box.

It actually worked out good, Rotated some tines, straighten some tine flanges.:D

Mine held right at a gallon doing what nuffer460 recommended by matching drained amount.

Mine has three plugs, one on the bottom side, where I drained the oil. one one the side on top, which has a vent (a hole in the plug) in it and is made out of plastic, and another larger one on the top gear box. I drained out of the bottom plug and tilted it backwards getting a little more than 3 quarts out. I then filled in back in from the side gear box 3 quarts, and added another quart to the top gearbox which topped that off. I hope I didn't overfill it, just tilled my garden, about 75 yards by 25 yards and no leaks

I wish had had the talent to tilt it upside down Spruce!!! Mine weighs over 400lbs, yours must be 600! :)

I was wondering why he didn't just read the manual, until I downloaded it. I don't think English is their first language. :D Check it out.

EVERY MONTH
1) Check the oil level in the side transmission by unscrewing the
relative screw and in the unit by slackening the level screw.
Use the rod on the plug for this operation (Fig. 14).

This is a good one too!

6) Never operate at a fast speed: this could damage the rotary
tiller while the result of the job would certainly be
unsatisfactory

I rotated mine with some ratchet straps around the torque tube (after strapping the gate closed) & pallet forks. Lift gently & let it roll/rotate until inverted then lift til enough clearance to drain it. It was outside, on dirt, at the time.

I later found that a suction gun did just fine for emptying the top box - but would still have to invert to really empty the side box (no drain).

amorey,

I have the same tiller & I use the same method as InTexas describes. About the viscosity of the oil to be used and the method of draining, I emailed Woods and this was their response,

"You use EP80-90 gear lube in both areas. Unfortunately engineering did not provide a drain plug for either area the only way to drain them would be to roll the tiller over and allow the oil to come out the fill plug hole."

When asked about a GL rating:

"Nothing special is required beyond it being EP80-90."

Even though changing the oil is a PITA, it sure is an awesome tiller.
