Tiller recommendations

We are newbies to the country and have lots of room for a garden. We have a Kubota MX5000 and I'm looking for recommendations for a tiller attachment. We'd like to till up about an acre to start.

New/used? Brands? Models?

We don't need anything fancy but I don't want the cheapest model available either - we plan to use it for several years.

Check Tractor Supply if they are in your region. They sell a rebadged King Kutter. Take a few photos of the King Kutter with you when you go see the "Countryline" tiller at TSC. Everything except the decals are the same. When I bought mine a few years ago I called King Kutter to ask and was told that the tillers were made on the same assembly line with the same everything except decals. Mine is a King Kutter decaled tiller but it was sitting in the TSC lot with a number of literally identical Countryline tillers.

Looks like I may have found one at a Farm and Home store a little way away.

Our local F&H has a 48" KK Yellow version. Almost bought it, but decided I wanted the lighter and narrower three point of the XB model.

I would bet the BX would run the 48" tiller just fine. Not sure what the XB model is though so maybe that is specifically designed for SCUT Cat 0/1 use. Power is not an issue however.

I have a 58 in Landpride and I am amazed at how well it does the job. Cant go wrong with them, they are built very heavy duty.

I've got a Landpride 42" for the BX24. Used it all of twice. Had to replace the leaking gearbox input seal after one use Other than that, it seems like a nice piece of gear...

Seems like my purpose on earth is to get the one bad unit in 1000, just so the rest of you don't have to

I was skeptical of the King Kutter II tillers because they were priced so much better than other brands. After renting a big name brand tiller a couple of times and scouring adds for close to a year, I succumbed to the attractive pricing and bought a new KKII tiller this spring. I am quite pleased with how it has performed tilling the garden. It's only my first year with it, but I am happy I bought it.

Yes, the XB model is made specifically for use with SCUT's. Some SCUT's have a narrower width on the 3PH, and they don't lift as high as a compact tractor.

The XB series addresses both issues.

EDIT: The Bush Hog RTC48 I have is made for SCUT's also.

I've owned a Woods for years, and it was good.....BUT, I now have a KODIAK, and this thing blows the Woods away. I bought it from Equipment Barn, and I couldn't be happier. MUCH cheaper than the Woods (by about 800 dollars!!!) and built much heavier. 6 tines per flange, and just does a great job. IMHO, BEST one for the money.

I'm running the same tractor you are.
For the past several years I've use a 72" King Kutter and it works great.
The 5000 can handle it with no problems, wishing I had TnT because that tiller is heavy.

Do you have rear remotes on your 5000 ?

Thanks for all of the replies! As far as rear remotes, I think I have one, but, remind me, what do they look like again? I believe they guy we bought from mentioned there was one.

Look for two female 1/2 inch quick connects next to each other. 1/2 inch refers to the tubing, the quick connects themselves look just like the ones on the loader. About an inch by three inches. You should also have a remote valve lever typically within easy reach of your right hand while seated.

Photo shows four (two sets) with black caps just above and to the left of the topping link tractor attachment point.

Thanks for the picture and the great explanation. We do have 2 of those (one set), so we must have one remote - we do have a lever easily accessible by my right hand.

Installing 2 remotes as we speak, was going to ask for pictures so I'll know if I installed them the right way.

Now for the stupid question of the day: I can hook up lines by just pushing them in but, how do get them out ?

Stock Kubota remotes are inclosed in a steel housing, couplings sit flush with the face.

Grasp the connector and slide the round brass top back (the top will side back) which will release the fitting, you may have to also push the hose forward toward the connection point. Sometimes they require this to connect them and some times they will just click on by pushing them on which they obviously did for you.
