Looking at the pics, did you flip it with a turning plow first? Then till?

If so, that changes everything. I can run a two bottom plow through virgin dirt and then disk it twice and even the junk we call 'soil' looks great.

For my money, a plow and a disk are perfect for anything bigger than an acre, and probably cost less together than a good tiller.

The rocks were I live would kill a tiller. Pretty rough on the plow and disk too.

I know that most are saying tiller but if I am going to do more than an acre, I use a disk. 2 trips with a disk does real fine and faster too. You can disk at 7 or 8 mph instead of till at 0.12 mph. This is my opinion only, just like those other things everybody has one.:D

I just disked about 2 acres this weekend. I wanted to use the disk for weed abatement and also for some evening out of the land in general.

This was the first tilling of that soil in anyone's memory out where I live. So between the weeds, the compaction, the squirrel/dog/gopher holes, and the gentle hills, it was a long weekend for me. But I am very happy with the results.

Weeds and compaction did not let the disk penetrate very deeply on first pass. But after a couple of passes all of the weeds were turned over and almost all of the holes were filled.

I think that I would to over the whole thing with a plow or middle-buster if I had time or money. Before the disking. That's for another year!

The spot that I tilled I did not plow over first. I did plow some ground but it is just to wet to go through with the tiller or even a disk for that. I made one pass through the plow stuff and got out of there fast, i was sinking to the axle. Yes I agree that a plow and a set of disks would be much better at anything over a couple acres and I do plan on getting a set of disks hopefully by next year, but I have a couple small gardens of my own and a bunch now that my neighbors and rest of my family would like tilled which is much eaiser with a tiller than a plow and disk. But this year I think the tiller will pay for itself quickly. Even with all the little rocks and some big ones the tiller either kicks them up to the top quickly or burries them deep enough that you don't even worry about them. After one pass I will pick most big rocks and till it agian just before planting.
