Do not do it! Every time I have "loaned" a tool to a friend it came back in a much poorer state

At least you got it back, half of the stuff I loan out I don't even get back:eek:

My B-I-L is a rancher in a very rural community and he and a number of locals have joint owned a number of machines including a big Fiat-Allis articulated FEL, a boom truck, a bulldozer (gone now), a big (huge) tandem wheel fertilizer spreader trailer, and a few others. The system works for them but mostly because my B-I-L does most of the repairs without complaining (much).

And yes, everytime someone uses one of them, it breaks (all of it is old and looks like junk except the spreader which looks new) and ends up parked in front of his shop. They make the system work and it works okay but there are still some hard feelings and cross words at times. There are also times when stuff sits around for months waiting for repair.

But, the bottom line is that everyone is right: Don't do it.

Hmm. Well, you know, because of all of the negative feedback I'm getting here, I'm thinking of going ahead with it. I mean, hey, being contrary seems to work OK for my 2 y/o - why wouldn't it work as well for me???

Ahem...

:)

I think one of the reasons it sort of works for my B-I-L is that none of the people invloved like each other enough to let the conventions of polite society to get in the way. :D

So maybe we should say not to do this with family, friends or anyone you like well enough not to call them a son-of-a-gun (or whatever) to their face.:p

But, see, they -would- all own it. Again, I'm having a language problem, here. What I meant was joint ownership. Still, it would be a bear and you all have talked me out of ever thinking of it again. Sort of :) At least, with this group of people and in this way. If my buddy moves in next door, well, I'll sell him half. But that's another story!

If your buddy moves in next door, and you sell him a half share in your tractor, you will have a partner in the tractor, but you might just loose a buddy. :D

It is amazing the number of things that I had loaned out that never came back that I found while cleaning the garage.

It's similar to loaning money to a friend; you not only lose the money, but a friend too!

I wonder if that will work with wives, and ex wives?:D

I'm glad you've decided not to do this, but now you still have to deal with them wanting to borrow it. If it's dificult for you to say no, or if your the type who really wants to help out a friend, than you better come up with some solid excuses beforehand.

Tractors break all the time. It very well might not be there fault, and unfortuanately, most people won't think it's there fault when it breaks, so what will you do when something does break?

Liability is about as solid a reason as any to not let anybody use your equipment. Tell them that your insurance wont cover you if something happens and you can't risk it. Accidents happen.

If they insist and you feel yourself weekeneing, then tell them that you will have to have a thousand dollar deposit to cover any repairs. If it's less than that, you will gladly return to them the balance.

Or you can just pull something off of it and tell them it's broken and you're having nothing but trouble with it. Parts are very expensive and they take forever to come in. Maybe when it's up and running again, and after you test it out, they can come over then. Of course, you just take it apart and tell them it's broke again. After awhile, they will give up and consider your tractor to be not very reliable and something they want to avoid.

Good luck,
Eddie
