For getting around all the trees on the part of my property I mow, I sometimes miss the smaller JD riding mower I had last year. On the other hand, even those trees require me to climb hills to get to the grass under them, and I do not miss the slippage with one wheel drive.

I am glad I have my BX. I think anything bigger and I would be regretting my decision. I like being low enough to the ground to feel nice and stable on the hills, while having enough clearance to get through the more rough areas of the yard (e.g. down by the pond/woods).

*RIDING MOWER Might explain it :
NEVER had traction problems with any of my 3 garden tractors but MY POWERKRAFT LAWN TRACTOR couldn't get over its own shadow.

Gary - The b6000 was a great tractor, I grew up with one. I agree about the craftsman. Replaced my snapper with one just to get a bigger deck, what a mistake. I have lots of orange scrapes along the back fender where I have pushed it with my kubota after my son has it stuck and just spinning on the lower parts of my property.

PlanMan,

The B-6000 was one amazing machine.... Wish I still had it....

Don't get me wrong the GT-5000 is not a bad machine. For the price, it is not a bad deal... But it is (to me) nothing more than a 25 hp lawnmower. And that is about all it is. It has it's place and it's limitations.... You get what you pay for!

It is often said here that no one ever wishes for less horsepower, but I suspect that there are those that sometimes wish they had a smaller tractor for many tasks.... If you are out there, and honest, let's here about it for the benefit of those who are new, and might not forsee such circumstances. What do you have, and what do you sometimes wish you had for some tasks? What are the tasks you think about something smaller for? The time of year for heavy use of our tractors is about over, so things should be fresh on everyone's mind...
Chuck
The ideal combination is 3 tractors one each of a small medium and large

On my 52 acre farm, the L4300 was a real eye opener. Even though limited by its 8x2 transmission, it's amazing what that thing can accomplish compared to my older ag typ tractors. At times, I've wished for bigger, however. It is challenged by the BB720 medium duty brush cutter; plenty of power for it, just lacking the weight/size to handle it capably. Haven't tried to bale or run the haybine yet, but figure an M6040 might do better. Still, anything bigger wouldn't trailer nearly as well.

For chores around the homestead, it's a different matter. The thing is a bull in a china shop. Constantly have to be on the lookout to avoid swinging the loader into a tree or backing into a building/vehicle/rose bush. Whenever the ground is wet (which it has been for the past year), the R1s are either tearing up the lawn or leaving a record of their passing.

So driven to despair was I over my attempts to domesticate the L4300, that I went and spent more hard earned cash for a B7610 on turfs. Now I can't determine whether the "best money I ever spent" was for the L4300 or for the B7610. Love 'em both.

Now what's next (should I win the lottery)?...an L3400HST (need something to fill that 24 to 45HP gap) or an M7040 (can't ever have too much HP)?

1*I have a B3030 but am toying with the idea of also getting a BX1850. While the B3030 isn't a monster by any means, it's just too big for some areas I have to mow and remove snow.

//////////////
1*I have a BX23 with a 60'' MMM.
For mowing the smaller areas I can't get to with the BX23 I used my PowerKraft Lawn Tractor with a 46'' deck. You may still find you could use something like it after mowing with a BX.
I was toying with getting a Bx1500 with a tiller and a front blade for tilling and dozing.
The plan was to leave the tiller and blade on the BX1500 all of the time.
Didn't want a MMM for it as I was using the Power CRAFT and besides A BX 1500 with the tiller and front blade attached is to long to get into and mow the areas where I mowed with the PowerCraft. This set up would have allowed me to use 6 different attachments without ever having to switch any implements.
This plan sorta went down the tubes when the PowerCraft died on me and was taken out of service.
I replaced the PowerCraft with a new Cub Cadet GT2554 garden tractor with a rear tiller front blade and a 54'' mowing deck.
Thought I was back up and running till I realized that I couldn't leave the tiller and front blade on the CC because that made it to long to get into the places I was mowing with the PowerKraft.
This dilemma threw me right back into playing musical implements which is the very thing I'm trying to avoid.
What to do now?
Install the Tiller and Blade on the CC and leave the 54" mower deck off? But then that leaves me without a mower for the places I was mowing with the PowerCraft.
Buy something with just a 54'' mower deck to mow where I was using the PowerCraft? But what about the new 54" mower deck I just got with the CC.
I was starting to regret getting the 54'' deck till it hit on me the solution was to get a tractor without a deck and put the one I bought on that tractor.

Why didn't you just buy a BX1500 with the 48" mower deck? Why did you buy the Cub Cadet? You probably could have found a good running Bolens fro a lot less money.

I've got an L4400 and so far it is just the right size for my needs. I drool over bigger tractors but don't need one in any way.

I been in some tight situations in the woods but I still don't feel like I need a smaller tractor.

However, last spring my B-I-L had weaned 250 calves and had them in his barn lot for feeding. All of his Ag tractors were to big to take into the feed lot. He has one small, old, JD but it doesn't have an FEL and it literally gets stuck in 250 calves (400-500 pounds each) worth of cow poo.

So one day I suggest that he try my 4400. He could use the FEL to carry feed, instead of doing it by hand with buckets, and he could also clean the lot out with the 4400. That poo accumulates fast. Well, he loved it. So, I suspect that a few weeks out of each spring he'll probably borrow my little tractor for feed lot operations. It suits me fine but it takes a good week or two to get the smell off of it.

There is no way I could clean out the stalls with anything bigger than the bx. Bigger would be nice sometimes but the lillte thing can do everything I need. May take more time or have to wait for rain to soften things up. Got alot to do this time of year.

Hadn't considered the 1500, thanks for the idea. One thing I like about the BX1850 is the ground clearance but for snowblowing and mowing, ground clearance isn't that much of a problem. If I'm not being too nosy, what did a 1500 set you back? I'm going to a dealer next week and will check out the 1500 if they have one in stock.
I priced a BX1500 for $8500 at my dealer .
This was with a tiller and a front blade but no mower.
