Tinnitus making me mental

Then you had the wrong hearing aids and/or the wrong person programming them. The ones I got in 2001 were from an audiologist in a doctors office and they were outright crooks; said they were programmable and they were nothing more than volume.

But the ones I got 6 years ago, and the ones I just got actually are programmable and I got them from an audioprosthologist and a hearing instrument specialist. The new ones have 3 programs and th 6 year old one have 2.

I agree with Bird. I have bad tinnitus too. The first aids I got from a "audioligist" were some in-the-ear models that I learned to hate. Then after a time without....and more hearig loss and worstening tinnitus.....I tried another brand at a COSCO store. (I was'nt gonna get duped for $6500 again.) Without my aids the tinnitus is pretty bad at times. I go to sleep with a TV to mask the steaming teapot sounds and provide white noise. Constant tea-pot noise for me when not wearing aids.

Now I love the BTE (behind the ear) aids they sold me at Cosco. Had 'em for 3 years now. Really mask the tinnitus and allow me to hear conversations and watch TV again. Unlike the ITE models...the BTE models make me feel like I am in the same room as the conversation...and provide very "natural" sounds. Very programable to my needs and I use up to 4 differnt settings depending on situations (could have as many as 12 if you want them). I paid $2000 for a pair.....and these (and Cosco prices) were a fantastic solution.

OH....my aids are Rexton Bridge 12's. I guess there are some better and more expensive models.....do some searching on the internet...and read what other folks have to say.

Does anyone know of anything that can help the ringing in my ears? Actually mine has progressed to more of a brake squeal noise at all times. I don't hear high pitched sounds anymore. 30 years in construction and way to many gunshots with no hearing protection when I was younger, including shots from inside a pickup truck.

I have severe tinnitus 24x7 (so loud I have been told people around me can hear it) and the only way I know of is to learn to ignore it and talk about it. If your not currently wearing HAs then its a plus for you. You may not need them to allow you to hear better but they can produce white noise to dronw out the ringing. You can also get a white noise generator at night or run a fan to help you get your focus off ringing.

I am profoundly hard of hearing so unfortunately these things cant help me. I do have help from the veterans Administration thank god. Year ago when a soldier came back from the field with tinnitus, the VA ENT said sorry there is nothing we can do for you-here is some money-try and have a good life. Now they have training on how to manage tinnitus and counseling. I am going to have my first counseling session next week and I hva ehigh hopes.

Be carefull with tinnutus because it will lead to depression if you just try to cope with it yourself. There is alot of rescouces online to help us out. Good luck.

I have Meniere's disease accompanied by tinnitus.

I take Lipo-flavonoid tablets (available at Walmart).
They're not cheap (around $26 for a bottle of 100), but they do seem to help some.

they helped me!

This topic has been discussed here before so you may get more information by doing a search.

In most cases, it doesn't go away. For me, I think it was the 105mm jeep-mounted cannon I was driving around in the Army. But here's some good news: After living with it for almost ten years (constant chirping, like fast morse code), mine went away one day. I had gotten so used to it, I didn't realize it was gone until some time after it quit. That was five years ago. I wear hearing protection when I use most gas-powered tools and saws. I would not like to see it come back but if it did, I know that after X amount of time, I would get used to it again. That is the main "cure" for most folks I suspect.

I was also lucky in that there was no associated hearing loss.

Smoking aggravates it greatly so if you smoke, cut down or give up.

Wear ear protection for even the smallest jobs like using a hammer or electric drill. I do believe that some degree of 'self-healing' is possible if you take extra good care not to make it worse.

A forced quiet environment cured mine.

I took care of my elderly father for seven years during that time the loudest noise I was exposed to was the phone ringing or him calling my name from his room.

Now I am very careful and use hearing protection. I feel very fortunate to get a second chance.

Take care--- J

Yep, non-smokers blame smoking for everything from cancer to hangnails.

Incidentally, I quit smoking 6 years ago and the tinnitus has gotten worse, but I'm sure you think smoking caused it.
