For years since the Army...I hear a high pitched sound constantly...It is mild though and I am used to it unless I think about it...I will say this though...I can occasionally pick up and hear radio programs without a radio ..Yikes..My Mrs. thinks I'm nuts and kidding but I'm not...it only happens occasionally ...I can also tell you when some store has ultrasonic motion detectors turned on...drives me crazy...I am glad I have a mild case and have gotten used to it...My sympathy to those with a severe case...I can only imagine the stress and discomfort it must cause....The Army never gave us hearing protection...so it is what it is I guess.
Hearing radio is not tinnitus. A non linear conduction is detecting (rectifying) the RF signal like the crystal in a crystal set. There was a case of a lady whose cook-stove oven played a local radio station. You are not unique in your hearing powerful radio stations. Let me guess, it is AM radio stations, not FM, right?
The other sounds can be tinnitus and are likely induced by exposure to loud sounds like artillery, small arms up close etc. In the USAF I never even saw hearing protection used for weapons training, just around jets and such.
