tinnitus treatment?

The wife and I stay away from the movie theaters because of this, it is ridiculous how loud they can run those systems.

Another peeve is to be abreast of (usually) a Honda Civic with a 500 watt amp so loud that his fenders are shaking and generally my loose coins in my ashtray are rattling.
To make all the worse it usually a tasteless electronic whump-whump tuneless noise that makes you think the whole Zulu tribe is about to attack.

I'm posting this here, because I bet I'm not the only one who's been around too many tractors, machine shops & guns without hearing protection while growing up.

Has anyone had any success in treating their tinnitus?

I am profoundly hard of hearing and suffer the max with tinnitus. This occured while I was on active duty so I am in VA care. There are different levels of tinnitus rangin from;

1) Hearing it from time to time as a back ground noise.
2) Hearing it all the time but as a back gound noise-gets worse with diet, noise or caffeine.
3) Hearing it all the time but its a foreground noise.
4) Hearing it all the time but its a foreground noise thats louder than your inner thought-inability to concentrate, sleep, depression and so on.

There is no cure, (pill or liquid) that will cure level 2 and on so dont waste your money. White noise generators will be of tremendous help for those who can hear. I have level 4 and up and at least now, the VA says it is no longer acceptable to tell its troops-Heres a check, go home, there is nothing we can do about it. They now have counseling and a new thing, training on how to deal with tinnitus. Training consists of teach you how to forget about the ringing, clicking, roaring or whatever else we can hear. That is the only thing we can do is to train ourselves how to ignore\forget theses **** noise and hope they come up with a cure.

More and more people will be suffering from hearing loss and tinnutus in the coming years-all over the world and it is dabilitating and causes so many disruptive things like insomnia, depression, suicide etc. In the US its estimated 50 million Americans
suffer from tinnutus and its climbing every month. Why-because of things mp3 players gaming consoles etc......

If you suffer from tinnutus, please show your support by joining ata.org or other tinnitus organizations. Hopefully, together we can prevent others from getting it or we can find a cure.

Buck up Nancy.

If the ringing in your ears is the biggest problem you've got. be grateful.

Had it all my life.

Bull, obviously you dont have it bad. Did you know that if you have tinnitus bad enough others near you can hear it coming out of your ear? Its a fact.

Your statement is completely ridiculous and you assume that everyone has the same level of ring as you-thats another false misconception on your part. There are many different levels from mild to extreme and those who are near the extreme suffer many issues; Suicide, vertigo, unable to concentrate, sleep, depression, insanity just to name a few.

Try and imagine somebody blowing a whistle in your ears 24x7 for the rest of your life? I am almost there but there are many who actually have it this bad.

My health insurance does NOT cover hearing aids. My first pair, from Beltone, in 1992 cost $900 each; i.e., $1,800 for the pair. The second pair, Starkey's from a crooked M.D., were supposed to be programmable, but were not, cost $1,000 each or $2,000 for the pair. and the current pair, Beltones from June, 2006, cost nearly $1,300 each; $2,588 for the pair, but they actually are digital, programmable with two programs. I understand the ones that cost $5,000 to $6,000 a pair are much better. I can hear talking one on one with others, but if two talk at the same time, I probably won't understand anything being said. I just don't even bother to watch anything on TV that isn't closed captioned. And talking on the phone to anyone with an accent is usually quite difficult.

Yeah, I think its BS that insurance wont cover them but we are working on it.

I've had it for 2 years at a cetain pitch where TV or radio fails to hide it at normal volumes and public places are very difficult yet quiet running water hides it completeley ..weird . Just glad the accompanying hyperacusis has gone now finally ..together it was **** .

Interesting, I also haven't heard the chirps for some time, that or I am completely accustomed to it by now.
I do find that when very tired the chirps are more intense or perhaps more obvious.

I have it in my left ear from walking by a metal cutting saw at exactly the wrong time a few years ago...Just a constant hiss. It's annoying, but I can live with it.

I'm missing fingers too, so luck just ain't my thing I guess.:D

Objective tinnitus

Objective tinnitus, on the other hand, is caused by things that can be heard by the examining physician. The causes of objective tinnitus are of course different than subjective tinnitus because the source needs to be physically capable of producing sound waves. The causes of objective tinnitus are primarily those things that cause faint sounds to the observer but potentially loud sounds to the sufferer. These include muscular diseases or vascular (blood vessel) diseases, essentially.

Imaging reveals how brain fails to tune out phantom sounds of tinnitus

Discovery of hair-cell roots suggests the brain modulates sound sensitivity

I can recall the coming and going of high pitched tones when I was in a grade school classroom when it was quiet.

Much of my hearing damage was due to weapons fire when I was in the service. I was in SAC and we soldiered harder than the rest of the AF. Relatively frequent small arms fire at the range. Never once did I ever see ear protection used at the range. One time it took a couple days before voices began to lose the "speaking from the bottom of a tin can" sound, yet I exited the USAF with excellent hearing. I kid you not, I could hear bats echo-locating their prey. I could hear ultrasonic alarms. My hearing went up over 20,000Hz in both ears but rapidly deteriorated over time. I have significant high freq loss and that is worsened by high freq tinnitus.

I too have a problem with sound in movie theaters. I think the young folks adjusting the audio level are hearing impaired due to listening to too loud music much of the time. They turn it up until they can hear it OK and nearly peel the paint off the walls. I have gone to the snack bar and got paper napkins to wad up for hearing protection before. Now I mostly avoid walk-in theaters for two basic reasons; too loud and inconsiderate people talking loudly during movie. In the good old days movies were like libraries, you whispered quietly or didn't talk at all.

For years since the Army...I hear a high pitched sound constantly...It is mild though and I am used to it unless I think about it...I will say this though...I can occasionally pick up and hear radio programs without a radio ..Yikes..My Mrs. thinks I'm nuts and kidding but I'm not...it only happens occasionally ...I can also tell you when some store has ultrasonic motion detectors turned on...drives me crazy...I am glad I have a mild case and have gotten used to it...My sympathy to those with a severe case...I can only imagine the stress and discomfort it must cause....The Army never gave us hearing protection...so it is what it is I guess.
