Tips On Digging Stumps With The BX24 Hoe

Couldn't help to notice you used the word "stump(S)", as in more than one. I would agree with escavader if there's more than two or three to remove. Stumps can be very hard on equipment, do you really want to put that kind of ear and tear on your machine or a rental? Besides unless you have lots of land stumps are hard to get rid of. On the other hand a grinder can polish them off in no time.

With a BX24 and a big stump, you need to get in the hole with a small limb saw and cut the roots the backhoe can't get to. Once you cut a few of those, I grab onto one of the big surface roots with the hoe, and twist the heck out of it until it comes free.

Ditto what's been said about digging out oaks & pines. One of the worst to dig out is a sweetgum - - once you've dug out what should be deep enough & you push on the trunk, it just bends. Sweetgums are very flexible and bend without poping out of the ground. They have a taproot, similar to pines - - + roots growing out radially, like oaks. My solution more than once was to dig down a respectable amount, make room to get in with your chainsaw, & cut it off below ground. Then just fill over it.

How about:

1. Dig out enough soil to expose the roots and main stump body to the air.

2. Dig a 30' trench up to the stump to bring oxygen.

3. Drill some big holes in the stump and fill with kerosene (let it soak into the wood for several days and keep refilling) until saturated.

4. Douse with gasoline just before the burn.

5. Toss a lit flare from a distance onto the stump.

6. Get out the smores and pull up the patio chairs.
