Tire Advice: Pickup Truck

I can tell you what tires NOT to buy. Perelli Scorpion A/T. The set I bought for my full-size truck was well rated, and had a mileage warranty. Good thing too, because by 25k, all four tires were down on the wear bars.

I liked them for the first 15k miles. Good traction and a smooth ride. Not worth the money though.

Based on that experience, I'm only buying truck tires with a mileage warranty, since it appears that there is little difference in cost between warranted and non-warranted tires. In your case, only using them during snow season, this may not be a factor.

I am now running BF Goodrich All-Terrain T/A's. Anybody have a set of these? Are they any good? They were plenty pricey.

I've been running BF Goodrich TA's since the early 1980's on plow vehicles that I owned. That included a Ford F250, F350, and 2 Chevy Blazer S-10's. My present S-10 has a set of Michelin LTX M+S's on it for the winter. If I hadn't got such a great deal on the 4 Michelins for $195.00 with 200 miles on them, I would have bought another set of BF Goodrich TA's. You can't go wrong with them. Do remember this. The wider the tire the less traction that you will have. In Ma. most of the vehicles in a ditch during the winter are 4 wheel drive SUV's.

I've run those on trucks and think they're a good year 'round truck tire. I'm driving a Tahoe now so I went with a little less aggressive Bridgestone Destination LE's (I had misnamed them as "Duelers" above) for most of the year and BFG Mud Terrains for winter. These BFG's are very aggressive and not known for long wear but do a fine, fine job in mud and snow. I'd never recommend them for a year 'round tire, though.

Thanks for all the advice. I have not heard a bad word about the BF Goodrich A/t TKO tires yet, although I know they are pricey! I have a friend who sells Cooper tires, and I ran the Cooper snow tires with studs on an old 2wd 1989 Toyota. I think the next step would be to check out prices and "kick the tires" so to speak!
I also endorse the idea of two sets of mounted tires for us that live in snowy climates. I never got around to acquiring them for the Tacoma, but I found the steel wheels on Ebay a month after buying the new Tundra.
Thanks again, and let you know what I get and how I like them.

I will third the Michelin LT M/S!

If you want an even more bullet proof tire in terms of puncture resistance with the same superb mileage of the LT M/S, there is no tire I found like the Michelin XPS Traction. It is considerably more aggressive traction wise then the LT but it's sizes are pretty limited to 235-85-16. With rotation, both will last well into 80,000 miles. MY current Toyo's with frequent rotation got about 42,000 miles and cost the same as the LT MX.

The only negative I've ever heard on the BFG AT KOs are wear on heavier vehicles. I'm absolutely sold on them as a great all-season all-surface all-around light truck/SUV tire compromise. On lighter stuff like a mid-sized SUV or Jeep - they seem to wear like iron (I get 70K plus). But I've been told they don't wear well on heavier trucks.

Well, I talked to my buddy and eneded up buying a set of Cooper S/T tires. My brother has had good luck with
them on a couple of trucks that he plows with, so I decided to give them a try. I really liked the B.F. Goodrich tires, but the best price I could find locally was $165, and I got the 4 Coopers for $501.
Thank for all the help.
