Tire Pressure for PT-425 Turf Tires?

If you should mix tires from different manufactures, be aware of the weight caring capability and the ply and air pressure.

If you want your tires to roll equally, all the tires should have the same circumference, and if you put 10 psi in some and 20 psi in others, it will not be the same. With hyd driven wheels it may not a big concern, but in a gear type setup, all the tires should be the same.

One should also consider that when working with a full load in the bucket, you are adding the weight of the bucket and load, and all the linkage in front of the front wheels and tires. For the 425, that would be about 800 lbs for load, plus 200 lbs for the bucket and linkage.

I've found that at anything over 10psi also produces quite the harsh ride on bumps.

Ditto...

Again, I don't have turfs, but I've found this to be the case with the Titan lugs that came on mine -- appropriately named Power Trac, which unfortunately is now discontinued in the 23x10.50x12 size. I don't recall for sure if they are 4-ply (rated), but that's what I think they are. They've been replaced by Tru Power lugs, which are 4-ply rating.

I think Tazewell is now selling the Carlisle Super Lugs as the lug tire, however.

Fluid-filled tires will also tend to give a harsher ride, because the fluid will not compress, and there is less volume of air to compress. The same amount of deflection would require compressing that smaller volume of air to a much higher pressure than it would if the fluid was not in there. Consequently it "stiffens" the whole feeling of the tire.

This has a similar effect to the stiffer sidewalls of the higher load range tires that JJ describes.

I hope you are not disagreeing with me, as the air pressure is stamped on the tires for the weight factor. If the weight is 1000 lbs per tire, that means that four tires will support a machine, weighing 4000 lbs.

As I said earlier, if you increase the # of plies, more weight can be carried, and more air pressure is necessary to do that.

My PT-425 stock turf tires only say not to exceed 35 psi. I recall reading that these tires are 2-ply. There is no indication of what the pressure should be. I had been running at 15 psi in each. The left front is more rounded at the edge than the others. This tells me that its over inflated at 15 psi.

If you search back in the PT forum. there is quite a bit of reading about tire pressure, and some experiments with reversing the tires. If you are running around on hills, you might consider upping the pressure or you will roll the tire off the rim.

I am running 26x12x12 lug tires on my 1445, at 21 lbs. It seems about right, and the ground foot print looks good.

Update: I just check the tires on the PT and there actually is another stamp on the tires that reads: MAX 10 PSI. I also just check the tire pressure -- its set at 20 PSI (my neighbor has been helping with trimming trees and hauling debris -- he must have set that high). I have been running on short hills with no problems. I guess that I will set the tires down to 10 psi and observe the results.

Plus the weight of some of the rear of the tractor as the unit tips forward on the front wheels every time you lift the FEL arms off the ground. So, you could have a 1500# tractor evenly balanced on 4 tires, giving a load of 750# on the front tires. Pick up 800# and do the PT pucker and all of a sudden you have 2300# on the front tires.

I have 4ply tires all around. I have found that if I don't run at least 15psi in the front and 10psi in the back I get too many sidewall failures from punctures and broken cords. I will sometimes run 20F and 12R. I regularly carry maximum loads over rough terrain and steep slopes with lots of broken rock and other debris.

If I could afford it, I'd get 6ply HDAP tires. And a good kidney belt.

I routinely run 22 or more in my 24 x 12-12's. When cleaning out my ditch (widened for my tractor), it is pretty common for me to scrape a tire along a wall and the hire pressure helps prevent breaking the bead seal. But I also have a suspension seat to dampen out the jarring of bumps.

I know this is an older thread but I have to vent I just ran a tomato stake right through the sidewall of my carlisle tire. I bought a new tire (not a carlisle) because it was less expensive $47 compared to $108 to $188 at different locations. It is a great tire and 4 ply at that now I am thinking I want to put these tires all way around. If I had a buyer for the other 3 good ones left on the tractor I would sell them reasonable and buy 3 new of the others. These 2 ply are really soft tires to handle, the 4 ply was a bear to put on and stiffer to boot.
I can see why adding more air might have saved me some time, labor and cash. The bad thing is I didn't even get many tomatoes of the stupid things.

Where did you find tires for $47?
