I got a flat on one of the front tires today and when I noticed it the "bead" was already broken. I pulled the screw that caused the flat out and I'm trying to get air into the tire without taking it off. My question is, what can I use to help make a new seal so that the air will stay in? I thought about using grease to help get it started, but then again I thought it better to ask first.

Thanks
John

I cheat; I have a Coates tire machine and one of those inflatable squeeze rings to make a tire seat. But, before I had those toys, I used to just take a rope around the outside of the tire, tie it, and then use a tire iron to tighten the rope by twisting it in a circle. That cinched the tire tight and closed any gap between the tire and the rim. Then when I aired it up, they always popped into the rim seat.

I have used the rope trick in the past and also used a ratchet strap.

In a pinch when I didn't have by bead seater air tank I have used starting fluid. Not a safe practice but it does work when your in the middle of no where with limited resources. Just a very small squirt if starting fluid into the tire and then light with match or lighter. Ether explodes, loud pop and the rapidly expanding hot air pop's the tire back on the bead.

As a preventative measure you may want to add tire seal to your tires to prevent leaks like this in the future. Or biodegradable tire seal for ag equipment.

Get a little liquid tire sealant in all 4 and you won't be bothered with flats again.

Probably to nobody's surprise, I've used that method before; scares the crap out of me! Knowing that it would flash, on the first one I kept lighting matches and throwing them at the tire from a couple feet away. When if finally went off it blew the tire over the rim seat and the entire tire jumped 3 feet off the ground. I guess that ether is stout stuff, especially when the entire tire fills with it's gas.

That's why I said use a very small amount of ether. It only takes a little to make it go pop. I just use one small squirt. Don't feel bad, I used to much the first time to and blew the tire off the rim. Scared the heck out of me to.

In a pinch, I've had to use my belt to get a smaller tire seated enough to take air... I SAID SMALL TIRE....

In high school we did that thing with seating beads with gas or ether.. after we shot a rim out of the basketball court one time, i decided that was enough of that..

I find that a little soap and water mixture on the bead also helps seat the tire when using a rope or ratchet strap.
