Re: Tire\'s Cracking.

Don't know of any way to un-do tire cracking but if you get another set that are new or with out cracks, keep them out of the sun and weather when they aren't being used.

Re: Tire\'s Cracking.

Keep the tractor in the garage or shed. The sun will tear your tires up! Keep it out of the Sun and weather. The whole tractor will be happier. You will too because you'll save the $200-500 each rear tires, not to mention the fronts... /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

Re: Tire\'s Cracking.

are you by any chance moving any manure, or acidic material? those things will rot the tires/paint off anything it touches unless washed after use. if not then like everyone else was saying, keep it out of the weather when stored, or at least out of the sun.

Re: Tire\'s Cracking.

Worse thing I have seen on tires is UV light. Growing up we never wore out a tire. We either hit something and tore it up or it dry rotted and popped.
Best bet is keep it out of the big sun when not in use. And here in East Texas it seems the setting Sun is the hardest on stuff. We had an open wheeled trailer sitting N to S and the tires on the West side gave up first.

Re: Tire\'s Cracking.

Try spraying the tires with Armorall about every month or 2. I heard this from a used equipment dealer. I've been doing it on my tractor & trailer tires and it seems to help.

Re: Tire\'s Cracking.

When the sun's UV rays hit the surface of the tires, there is a chemical reaction that releases ozone. This ozone then attacks the surface of the tire. This phenomena will effect every rubber part including belts, hoses (well, the rubber ones anyway), etc. As far as I know, there's no way to stop it other than staying out of the sun as much as possible. The Armor-All might help to prevent it a bit though.

You could check the label on Armor-All or some other tire product designed for cars and trucks. Some of them offer UV protection. Kind of like sunblock for your tractor!

Years ago i had to replace the tube in our 20+ year old Yanmar 240D(vintage 1978). Both (original)rear tire sidewalls were cracked and looked fragile as heck. The tire guy said that he would go easy but couldn't guarantee he could break the beads withoug tearing the rubber. I cringed as he wacked the tires with a large rubber sledge. I was sure the ole tire was going to bust, but it didn't. 5 years later i sold the tractor to a friend who is still running the original rear rubber(fronts got replaced after 15 years because the rims cracked). I guess depending on the tire, these cracks may be cosmetic to a point. BTW, the Yanmar always lived in an open sided drop shed off the main barn, so it got alot of sun.

I have been using the Armor All tire shine on my antique tractor for 8 years now and the tire side walls still look like new (no cracking).

I'm pretty sure Armor All has UV protection. And I could see putting it on a restored antique tractor. But I'm not sure I could bear to see my B-I-L's expression when I drive by with shiny black tires on my little orange tractor. He thinks my tractor is 'cute' and on the few occasions that he has driven up and witnessed me rinsing the tractor off after heavy use he just has this sort of puzzled look on his face. I don't think any of his old and numerous tractors have ever been rinsed off, much less had the tires blinged up with Armor All.

However, since my tractor currently resides under a tarp with parts of the tires exposed, I will may just risk my reputation even further by putting the Armor All on them at least until I get my shed built.

I guess I might as well hang some fuzzy dice from the ROPS too.

You have to look for it, but they make a non-shiny Armor All. I always use Westley's White Wall cleaner on my car tires, although I have never owned whitewalls. It works great, leaves a natural rubber appearance. I don't know about the UV part, though. The low gloss Armor All is something I put on my dash to reduce reflections in the windshield. It's out there, just not easy to find since it seems the world has gone crazy and thinks rubber is supposed to be shiny.

UV attacking the rubber is the cause of "dry rot". Rubber is naturally white. Tires are black because manufacturers put carbon in the rubber mix. The idea is that the darker carbon absorbs most of the UV rather than the rubber, thereby inhibiting dry rot. If you've ever had any experience with white rubber tires, you've probably noticed that they dry rot much faster than black tires. UV protection either chemically (armor all) or mechanically (garaged, barned) is the only "prevention".

Re: Tire\'s Cracking.

I am just curious...how old are the tires. I had some cracking on my R4s one time when I let the pressures get too low and I was using the front loader a lot. Also, I thought ozone had something to do with tire cracking. My mothers car sat in tht garage for 6 years. I checked it out one day and her tires were full of cracks. Had to replace a like new set on Uniroyals. They were not exposed to much UV light.

Ozone will also attack tire rubber. It's present in the air in varying quantities depending on location and season and local conditions. Ozone and UV light are what makes your windshield wipers need to be replaced every so often, too.
