Haven't been making much progress on the shop, had to make some repairs after a dead tree fell and hit it in a wonder storm a few weeks ago. 1154657605.jpeg
I already repaired the roof but am waiting for warmer weather to fix the siding as it's too brittle in the cold to unzipper. I probably will just straighten the gutter, luckily it's on the side that is kinda hidden.

On a positive note, I have finally starting installing my lift, if all goes well it should be up and running by the end of next week.20200207_182431.jpeg

That's disappointment. Looks like it's been dead for quite awhile, if that's what is laying on the ground there.

Unlucky parked tractor also?
Actually zero damage to that mower believe it or not. The limb sitting next to it hit the roof, broke and came straight down, hit the siding and stuck un thr ground. Luckily it didn't even tear the tyvek under the siding.

It probably was, it broke off about 20ft off the ground and the wind appears to have blown it against the natural lean.

In the past couple years I've had a lot of trees die off. I currently have 3 large red oaks and 2 large white oaks that I need to take down.

2 years ago I lost probably about 8-12 trees that blew over in a wind storm, nothing worse then a week+ of rain then a wind storm.
This one would have cut through my house if it had gone the other way.218911592.jpeg

This one missed the edge of the roof by about 5ft1483141570.jpeg

Your trees really don't like you!!! :)

In town, they fall over all the time because they where planted after the houses where built and watered with the grass for 50 years without every building up a real root system to hold them in place. Then after a week or steady rain, the ground gets saturated and they just fall over from their own weight. I watched one do this on a beautiful clear day. It just slowly fell over across the street from where I was working.

Could your's be dying because of damage from construction?

Doubt it, all the trees that are dying aren't anywhere near the construction area. The last 2 white oaks were a surprise, the one I didn't know was dead until I came home from being gone for a week and my trailer was covered and branches with a hole in the deck. 607589632.jpegI've lived here 8 years and the past couple have been bad about dead trees.
You can see the relation of that big double white oak to the house.

It's been my experiences with timber that it takes 15-20 years to truly understand the cycle of dead trees. Three years ago was the worst year I've had in the last 20 in regards to Oak trees. With three wood stoves feeding out of the wood pile we are just now sort of getting caught up.

Then we may go into a cycle where we are having to cut healthy trees in areas that need thinned to get enough firewood.

Have no idea what causes this other than natural cycles?

As I understand it, there is currently an oak blight that damages roots going around.

Here in the northeast, there was a 3 year cycle of gypsy moths following a year or two of drought that knocked out roughly a quarter of them.

We had 2 days or rain with my 6 inch rain gauge overflowing. Some people are reporting over 7 inches of rain.

When I closed the chicken coops last night, I heard an odd sound, so I stopped and listened closely, and realized it was a tree falling over. I'll go look for it this weekend when it's less muddy out.
