I’m not on here a whole lot but wanted to see what you guys think of this tractor. The hours scare me a bit but another tractor I’m looking at is 44 years old with 705hrs. I really like the idea of a cab. I understand that the low range doesn’t work but I never used the low range on my JD. I was almost always in the mid range.

I sold my jd4005 due to needing something to lift round bales and to operate a round baler. Thoughts or suggestions are appreciated, good or bad. Thanks and I hope everyone has a Merry Christmas.

Not be able to go below 3 mph would be a problem for me. I mow at 2.4 mph with my WM75, which is 2nd gear in mid-range. The next up gear puts me at 3.5 mph and that is too fast for my tired old back. I use low range for grapple work and moving stuff around, such as lifting pallets. Otherwise, you would be wearing out the clutch slipping it.

Here are some comparisons from Tractorhouse. It has a loader, these don't, so that would add value. Fixing the transmission would involve splitting the tractor. I would talk to a local NH dealer to get a ballpark estimate. If I was buying it, it would be with the intent to get the transmission fixed. That cost plus the purchase price would be how I would make a decision.

Much appreciated. I’m trying to stay cheap right now. I found a (I think 1965) 4020 with loader on tractorhouse as well. The hours don’t worry me too much on this one. I just feel it’s way overpriced for being a gas burner. I know a power shift is expensive to get parts for as well.

The guy still has this tractor. I’ve tried searching on here and online without much luck. Does anyone know where to find info on this tranny without buying a service manual? I don’t want to buy a manual if I don’t buy the tractor. Thank you!

I almost always use low when using the FEL. Picking up/pushing over etc mine will stall out if I don't. But I am not using an HST, that may make the difference.

Agreed, most gas tractors aren't gonna work in my world. Not enough oompf.

I understand where you’re coming from. I almost always was in the B range on my 4005. I did use low occasionally when loading a trailer or something like that. No hydro on that either.
