RichZ I agree with everything you say, but we really had a problem with woodpeckers. They would peck a 4 inch diameter hole in my cedar sided garage and tear out the insulation. I would have to cut out a section of the siding, re-insulate, then match up a patch to fix the hole. This got labor intensive and expensive. I love animals but this happened 4 times in one spring and 2 the next. I live in the woods and there is a large woodpecker population. Rather than try to shoot them for what they do naturally, we hung up rubber snakes. The rubber snakes are a permanent part of the garage now, like paint or guttering. My point is that woodpeckers can be very destructive to your home but you don't have to desroy them to control them!
