In 1981, when I bought an Isuzu I-Mark diesel sedan without knowing a lot about them, I bought the extended warranty; never used, so I haven't bought one since either.

However, I have bought extended warranties on a TV and washer and dryer. As with any insurance, you win some, lose some.

Last extended warranty I purchased was $350 for a $1000 Toshiba laptop that is still working great after 6 years, I lost money there. The one before that was $300 on a Sony console TV that went ten years before needing a repair, five years after the extended warranty expired. Doubt if I will ever buy another service contract or extended warranty.

Younger members here are probably fortunate they didn't have to endure the headaches of cold weather startups in older cars and trucks. Used to be, you would go out in 20 degree weather, set the choke, and hopefully get the engine started before running the battery down, or worse yet, flooding the engine. Then you had to cope with a ten minute or longer warmup so you didn't have to worry about stalling once you drove away.

Crazy... I can now lay in my bed and start my car with my IPhone. I can also see how much gas is on the tank, check the tire pressure and check engine oil life. I think we have progressed a little in the last 20 years. I am shocked that I still have to drive it... C'Mon, why can't my IPhone drive this for me yet?

Let's not forget vinyl seats...ice-cold and hard in winter...hot enough to fry your butt in summer. No thanks!

Drum brakes and no ABS...no thanks!

Sealed beam headlights...no thanks!

Leaf springs and live axles...no thanks!

Exhaust systems that rotted out regularly...no thanks!

Shocks that required regular replacement...no thanks!

Loose and sloppy steering gear boxes...no thanks!

Clutches that needed regular adjustment...no thanks!

Carbs...NO THANKS!

Points...no thanks!

Crappy radios...no thanks!

Body cancer...no thanks!

Manually cranked windows...no thanks!

And so on ad nauseum.

I dont mind manual cranked windows, locks. too many things to go wrong.I hate ABS. I do believe I can stop better in powder snow without abs, and love skidding cars sideways to park in snowy lots. you cant do that with ABS on.

Hopefully you will get one of those new Craftsman garage door openers for Christmas, they have one now you can operate from your smartphone...no need to carry a remote in your car.

What kind of car do you have...and what kind of security is there to prevent another person (using the same app) from starting your car?

Don't forget the crappy plastics, cheaply made engines and thinner bodies new cars have!

Give me an old car I have to crank for ages and warm up any day over a new crap box.

My mother's 1997 Ford Fiesta was made just as cars were making the transision from well made to crappy, so we're lucky. It has EFi so fires right up, has a strong chassis, thick body, and even though you could drive off right away, it gets warmed up for 10-15 minutes to let the oil circulate and heat up, as you always should with an engine when it is cold outside.

The app will only work with the registered GM vehicle with Onstar. Onstar sends a unique code to the IPhone that you have to enter in the app. The code will only work on that IPhone with that user. Now if someone stole my phone and figured out my password, then I am in trouble.

I have a 2010 Chevy Traverse that I use this for. I think the app only works with 2010 and 2011 models.
