TODAYS SEAT TIME

I use my rotary cutting tractor in some pretty serous brush, and limbs kept hitting the upright muffler until it cracked where it mounts. SO, today I took it off and straightpiped the tractor with a shorter pipe!

It's not much louder, but I don't run ANY equipment without hearing protection, so it really doesn't matter either way to me...

Only problem with those open exhausts like that is the danged birds building nests in them. Both of mine with that still of stack have had bird nests in them the last few weeks. Most of thm blow out when they get a load put on them but the NH 8160 actually got a bit chocked up the nest hung a some burrs and rough spots at the top. I had to reach up in the hot exhaust flow and pick at it to get it out of the pipe. I was not talking or thinking nicely about those critters at that point.

I should have shown the empty Bushes Bean can I already put on the tractor, to cover the exhaust when I shut it off. lol

I wasn't thinking birds though, I was thinking water and future snow.

OK, it would take a good sized can to fit over mine. And the IH magnums at the farm don't have a right side door to reach the stacks. The only good thing is they all have a gooseneck at the bottom of the stack before it goes to the engine which will act as a trap and has a weep hole in the bottom.

Do you have a spark arrestor in the exhaust?

No, and I couldn't see any in the muffler I took off either, both are straight through. I don't see that as a problem anyway, as it's always pretty green around here, I got stuck yesterday in a wet spot when the cutter high centered the tractor. lol

I've never even heard of a diesel tractor starting a fire here nor have I ever seen a spark come from the exhaust from one of mine or one I was running either.

My old L275 Kubota got tagged by the Forest Service years ago for not having a spark arrestor. It didn't come from the factory with one so all that I could do is buy an aftermarket contraption to go on top of the upright muffler.

That lasted about a year before vibration disintegrated it.

Yeaaa, that could be a problem if I ever wanted to go into one of those areas, but it's just not a problem here where I live.

I've seen those screens burn out in my old dirt bike days but those days are long gone. lol
