Too good to be true

Yes sir, John, in my opinion that's exactly the way to do it. If I'm not busy I may listen to a person calling on the phone, but I'm not going to tell them anything. And since I'm retired and have the time, we keep more detailed records than most; even keeping all cash transactions (of which there are very few) on Quicken, as well as the bank statement and credit card information. Of course, I always reconcile the monthly statements, but I usually look at the status of each account online at least once a week.

I hadn't heard about the particular charges mentioned in the link you provided, although twice in the last 10 years I've found charges on one of my credit cards that were not ours. In each case, the credit card company removed the charges and issued new cards with new account numbers.

One thing I noticed with all of the scam craigs list adds, there are white spaces around the visible text. If you highlight the blanks, there are non-visible words in there. It must be a flaw in the scam software they are using.

Bullonee,

Besides the obvious criminal intent, it really ticks me off that he tries to evoke sympathy by pretending to be one of the patriotic soldiers, serving our country, and having financial difficulties. Treason should be added to the DA's list of charges.

here's another...
here's a reply I got froma response for a bx23 for ~$3K on VT/NH craigslist:D

this is what I got when I sent an email that said "I'll give you 4K cash when the tractor arrives in VT and it meets with my brief inspection"

Hi again,

The tractor is already at the shipping company in Houston, TX sealed
and ready for the shipping. I have a contract with Safepay Solutions
so this deal must go through them. I'm very busy with my job and I'm
left out of the town so I can't meet in person with you so this is the
reason why I chose to sell my tractor over the internet. According
with Safepay Solutions you have 15 days from the time you receive the
tractor to inspect it and decide if you want to keep it or not. Here
is how it will work:
1.First of all I will need the following details from you:
- Full Name
- Full Shipping Address
2. After I will receive the details from you, I will forward them to
Safepay Solutions.
3. After they will process your info, they will send us both invoices.
The invoice will send you the details on how to make a refundable
payment.
4. Safepay Solutions will contact me and I will ship the tractor to
you. After you receive the tractor you will have 15 days to test,
verify and do whatever you need to the tractor. If you will buy, then
I will receive the payment details from Safepay Solutions so that I
can pick up the money.
If you wish to make the transaction, please send me the necessary info
so that we can proceed.

I look forward to hear from you,
Jim

Poor grammar = SCAM  And there is lots of it in this example:eek:

Doesn't matter if it is in an email, on an auction site, or where you see it.:(

If poor grammar is a metric for judging a scam, then at least 60% of the posts on this site qualify as scams.....

hokay, boys.... I'm asplit'n fum year to year.... ya no ya gotta be gut in der ainglish to writ sech poetic commeterry:D

Seriously, now.... look carefully at the reply to staysalert.

I count eight mistakes that I don't think any of you would make... with tenses and such. Errors in tense are quite typical, as I'm sure you folks have noticed, among the scammers/phishers.

In TBN discussions, I overlook typing mistakes and what I consider to be legitimate errors..... I guess that my antenna go up some, too, when $$ are involved.

Unfortunately if they only get a 1/2 % "hit" rate or less that's more than enough to keep these scams going into perpetuity, such is the exposure of the internet. I got a call from my brother in law asking for help re: $7500 he sent to tx to buy a harley. (Blue book was around $13K). He sent a cashiers check and now can't get a hold of the girl!! I told him his $7500 is history but to report it to the police anyway and at least document it. (Wish he would have called me BEFORE he sent the check - I could have saved him $7500 + the cost of the stamp!! (bike was her fathers who passed away and she just wanted a quick sale etc etc etc)
