Re: Too impulsive? I don\'t think so but I\'ll listen...

Thanks again to all. As you can see by my edited sig line, We did sub the 48 BH for the 447. Caught the order desk just in time...the order had been entered into Deere's system, but hadn't been processed yet, so they could stop it without problem. Looks like I will be able to pick up everything except the BH on Monday or Tuesday! Now, I've got to start browsing the archives here for tips on getting things done.

What is a collar shift transmission?

Re: Too impulsive? I don\'t think so but I\'ll listen...

Collar shift is a common term for a gear shift that is somewhere near the steering column, as opposed to a stick in the center of the floor pan. There are other meanings , but this is generaly what someone is talking about.

I think you make have collar shift confused with power reverser or shuttle shift. The collar shift transmission are a regular gear shift type transmission but on the Deere's the shifter is on the left side of the seat.

Re: Too impulsive? I don\'t think so but I\'ll listen...

I was confused by the term "collar shift". Last weekend I tested a 790, which is described in the JD info as having a sliding-gear transmission, but the 990 is described as having a collar shift. They say the collar shift gears stay in constant mesh. I do not know what this means, and I did not drive the 990 to see if it was any different. Just curious.

With collar-shift the gears stay in sync so no grinding when changing gears....provided you use the clutch!

Re: Too impulsive? I don\'t think so but I\'ll listen...

So, does collar actualy refer to the way the gears are engaged or something else?My old massey and my 790 have gear lever in the floor and are always refered to as gear or straight gear around here. Then shuttle shift trannys with a seperate lever to go forw or reverse on the opposite side of the gear selector have been called collar shift by many dealers. It seems that slang words have different meanings in alot of different areas.Im sure someone can explain the details much better.

Re: Too impulsive? I don\'t think so but I\'ll listen...

For what it's worth (not much?) I always thought collar-shift was the most basic type of manual tranny imaginable. No synchro, so no shifting while the tractor is moving? Select a gear while you're stationary and go?

If I'm wrong, I'm sure I'll know about it within the hour. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Also, don't be too quick to dismiss hydro, it sure is nice. And if not hydro, at least something other than plain gears, if the budget allows.

Good luck, John
