Took the plunge. Finally going solar!

According to everything I've read and found in regards to solar in my area, its 22-28 years to break even. I don't trust the systems and companies installing to be around that long. I'll stick with good insulation and air infiltration issues. Good luck to you, though. I wish it were more financially practical for us.

Install almost done. Just getting the final panels in.

I was very fortunate. NYS allowed leasing. I don't own the panels, so I didn't have to deal with credits. The cost of the system was half of what it was for me to buy them. Amazing the lack of financial thinking in this state.

I've had the system for about 5 years now. Covers more electricity during the year than I use (except one). I don't own them, so no increase in insurance, guaranteed production (every year the company sends me a check as they have always under performed), and I expect in 20 years for the company to say we don't want them, they're yours. What company would pay a few grand to remove a 20 year old system from a house.

So thank you to all you tax payers. It's not fair to you all. It's also not right that we have net metering. The electric company had to put in a two way meter at their expense & they give me retail price for excess output.

Just refy'd the farm and was astonished when the appraiser asked if we had an PV systems on the premises.

It seems that it actually devalues the property if it's found.

Home buyers aren't so impressed with buyiong someone elses' old PV systems.

Who knew?

Glad we didn't buy in.

That's interesting. In NY they like to take all the money they can from you, but they also want to support "green." The assessor tried to use it to increase our assessment, but the law says they can't. I wonder if panels are considered a liability to the value in Florida because of the hurricanes. The idea of a house where electric price is FIXED at $200/yr is certainly a selling point. That's the cost to be connected to the grid.

I put in a 9.2 KW grid tie (40 panels) the end of '11. I broke even this summer. I did the install, total cost was $ 30K, Got $ 20K back from fed credit and state money. We are all electric w/4 adults in the house. The PV makes 2/3 of our total power usage, resulting in an average bill of $ 100/month for the utility power. I also have ground source heat pumps for heating. I installed the heat pumps and PV looking forward to retirement (not retired yet), but the savings are great.

You get 30% on $20k, or $6k. So you would get a tax refund of $1000.

Not correct. The credit is a $1 for $1 credit against tax liability. You must have equal or greater liability than the credit. So in your example you’d be able to receive a $5k credit equal to your tax liability. Meaning you’d get $0 on your return.

This can get very complicated as I’m sure you have other deductions and taxes so absolutely consult your tax professional before deciding.

Edit didn’t see there was another page on Tapatalk and this was covered. Apologies!
