John Deere 1023E
I was happily mowing away yesterday on my 1023E when the fire pager on my hip went off for a call. I happened to be in shorts, and happened to dismount from the right side - where the joystick is. Welllllllll... I jumped off in a hurry, and the joystick went up my shorts, and due to my forward momentum, I then proceeded to to flip forward and face plant into the ground. I ended up with a bent joystick, and a mouthful of fresh grass, but I learned a lesson - don't jump off the right side of a tractor in shorts!

Anyone ever done anything dumb mounting/dismounting their tractors???

So isn't it normal to have a joystick in your shorts? :) Thank your lucky stars that you avoided what could have been a serious accident.

My stupid was getting off my old tractor - a big old JD 2030 - on a tight forest road with a few feet drop on the left I simply didn't realize the drop and swung down to quickly free roll down the hill into a thorn bush. To make matters worse, because of the condition of the dirt, the height of the JD foot platform, and my aging knees. I could not get back on the tractor. I had to slowly clamber over the box blade and up to the seat from the back.

I was more careful next time.

I can see it coming,..... new tractors won't start if wearing shorts. That will put an end to such shenanigans.
:D
But, yes -- have had the joy stick up the shorts a time or two in the past. Sorry that you did the face plant.

No experiences like yours, but I did get a chuckle out of imagining how it could happen. Glad you weren't hurt. Are the shorts OK?

Yes... I can see it happening, good news no injuries. Like a horse, I've learned to mount and exit my 2520 on the left side for just this reason. Just a newbie mistake.

I haven't had the joystick up the shorts problem yet, now I will know to be careful. Guess there is 1 advantage of the older style loaders with the lever on the loader and sticking clear across the step so you couldn't get off that
side if you wanted to.

Glad you weren't hurt. Make it to the fire OK?

Last few years, knowing the hazards of being "down" for any length of time I started playing it REAL SAFE.

No more leaving equipment running when I dismount, and I take it VERY, VERY slow calculating every step and having a tight grip on something as I traverse equipment.

More than a few time my foot slipped but my firm grip on something solid saved me. I can't count the number of " almost's" that could have got me.

We all need to think twice and three times when using the stuff we use, because we've all see enough freak accidents posted here.

That one recently with the guys kid and a chipper still gets to me.
