When I'm bush hogging lots I sometimes get stuck between trees and have to walk back to the truck to get the chainsaw. Then after cutting down the offending trees I have to take the saw back out of harms way. This wastes a lot of time and so I built a metal box on my bush hog to carry the saw and a gas can. I built this out of an old file cabinet and bed frame. I got the cabinet from the dumpsters where we take our garbage. I saw it sitting outside the gate, turned around, and threw it in the back of the truck. The next day I scored two sets of bedrails the same way so the only cost was the welding wire and paint. Even the hasp is off a wooden box that I built back in 1998 that's long gone. I fabricated the hinge.

Here's some pictures:

I have to remember to let my camera warm up before taking pictures. When I bring it outside from the A/C the lens fogs up.

That looks great! I could have used such a toolbox today when clearing a filed overgrown with wild roses, hawthorn trees, and pine.

Learning to weld is high on my list of skills to acquire.

Good job, just need some bar oil in there. Don't you worry that you'll fall the offending tree onto the tractor?

Very nice box and setup! I just took 2 seconds and wedged an old milk crate in the rear center section between the tailwheel frame and the gear box

Thanks everyone,
I just threw the saw and gas can in there for the picture but have plenty of room for the oil. A milk carton would have been ok but this way I can leave the saw in there under lock and key. I'm going to make a small box to fit inside with a few tools also.

That might work for most of us, but not me. I would probably add a wrench and screwdriver for the saw, and a couple extra pins for the tractor, plus a couple of nuts and bolts for most all the needed parts, and then a couple cans of PB Blaster, and maybe some touch up paint, and a can of open gear lube, plus a gallon or two of hydraulic oil, plus some diesel for the tractor and a couple other very important things.
Next thing you know, the bush hog is cutting at an angle and I can't figure out why...

Does it make the hog want to run lopsided? If it did you could add another to the other side.. or a counterweight.. etc.

I like the concept and implementation.

I started to mount this one on the right side but realized that it would make pulling the blades hard. The reason I would have liked it on the right is that it would be in my line of sight since I turn that way to keep an eye on the hog. When I was formulating this box in my mind I watched to see how a box would fair or would it get hit and beat up. It appeared that nothing intrudes in the area where the box is mounted. This has been an idea for months and everytime that I had to walk to get the saw I got closer to actually building it. Finding the file cabinet and bed rails just started the project and I finished it in two afternoons.

Haven't run it yet but will in the morning. I don't see that it will make any difference since this hog is so heavy anyway.
