Sandman,
You're probably right but you did remind me that I need to put the bar wrench in there...and maybe a cooler full of ice water, and a sandwhich or two....bug spray, need bug spray.

If it did run lop sided.. my bet is that a very little opposite side ballast would take care of it.. Perhaps a cinder block or scrap piece of metal plate 1" thick.. etc.. etc... As you point out.. the heavy hog may not even need it.

Good idea about the box for the chain saw. I think carrying the gas can in it is not a good idea though. Gas is designed to explode. They say one cup of gasoline has the same explosive power as a stick of dynamite. My chain saw runs a long time on one fill up, so carrying the extra gas is not needed. You should think about it.

I wonder if carrying the mixed gas in a small container ( quart? ) might be safer than carrying a can and the mix oil?

Doesn't take much gas to burn off the oxygen in that small enclosure. Humbleto might have a good point about the spare gas can. Leave it at the barn if you can.

I did think about it, that's why the box isn't welded all the way around and there are gaps top and bottom for ventilation. The gas container is sealed too, I just don't like having the spout down in the gas, but the sealing disc is under it. Gasoline is designed to burn and it does that very well and fast when it reaches it's flash point.

The box got a good testing today and other than losing the front hinge pin posed no problems at all. I forgot to finish welding the pin and the tack weld broke. Will replace it in the morning. even without the pin the lid stayed in place and I didn't know the pin was gone till I opened the lid to get the hornet spray.

With all this talk and worry about the extra gas can.. even a small one.. people seem to be forgetting that there will be a tool in there that has a full tank of gas.. Anything 'bad' that is going to happen will happen with that gas too. so if the box is not safe for a gas can.. then it is not safe for a chainsaw filled with gas. likewise.. if it is safe for the chainsaw filled with gas.. then a small 1/2 gallon container full of extra gas won't be much worse. it's already been pointed out that a cup of gas can burn the tractor down... the chainsaw has that coverd a few times over...

My reasons for not liking the gas can, in the same box with a chainsaw full of fuel, is simple. The chainsaw has a metal shroud around the gas tank, or if it is like my old one, the tank is metal. The typical gas can is plastic and is easily punctured by other things boucing around in the box, including the sawblade on the chainsaw. I just picture a box bouncing around with sharp instruments in it and a plastic gas container getting punctured, or a hole worn in it from the bouncing. A bush hog does a lot of bouncing in a rough field.
Just my two cents,

I think I have to have one of these. Will probably carry extra fuel (gal) and gal container of bar oil. Will make a padded container within the container to hold and protect the plastic gas can and bar oil. If you want small metal gas tank you can buy a spun aluminum mountaineering jug. They are quite robust, not vented but can take great pressure.

I can see right now that although I wouldn't need a counter weight on my super HD hog I would make a holder for a cooler to go on the other side. I have one of the Peltier junction solid state ones. If it were shaded it might make enough cold to warrant the wiring hassle. It would extend the life of the ice.

I need a couple tool boxes to put on my FEL arms too but they will have to be HD to not have them literally "brushed off."
