Or better yet, take the Chinese made piece of pot metal back to TSC and get an exchange or refund. If an exchange, test it out in the store before taking it home.

Why waste time trying to make a cheaply made tool work properly?

The problem with that is that it is a 160 mile round trip to the TSC. :(

Put in a couple miles of fence.. by then it will loosen up..

If you got a young kid.. give it to him and tell him to open and close it 5000 times and you'll give him 5 bucks.. give him a can of wd-40 to spray the joint with now and then.. if that don't loosen it up.. then you might have a problem...

Better yet if you have a kid give it to him and tell him not to be opening it up and closeing it. It should be loosened up within 15 or 20 minutes. You will also save your 5 bucks

It's highly unlikely that that tool is pot metal.. it's more likely steel..

It may not be pot metal; but I'll bet it's not steel either. More than likely it's that uniquely Chinese invention I call Alumasteel. This metal looks like steel, is magnetic like steel, and is almost as soft as aluminum.

As far as must have tools, my barn/shop is full of mechanic and precision tools including some heavy machinery such as mills and lathe. lol ... at one time or another they all fall into the category of "must have". I guess it just depends on how much you want to undertake yourself. I do everything myself form daily maintenance such as greasing to oil changes to tune ups and then up to repairs/rebuilds when required. I also make or upgrade a lot of my own implements too. So where do you draw the line? You can never have too many tools (or guns:)), right?

I consider carrying an assortment of tools on the tractor a necessity on my property. Once I get off the road and into the forest, I never know what to expect, plus it can be a ways from the barn/shop. If I have a breakdown I might not be able to get a tow truck in there to get it out. So I got another tractor. But I do carry some basics with me to help me get unstuck, or get an implement off or to do some minor repair, a loose nut or bolt, change a tire out there, etc.
