I'm not sure why I looked at the engine this afternoon because I'm still waiting for my guide plates to arrive, but something looked off to me as I was looking over the rocker arms. I'm no expert, but don't rocker arms use studs with adjusting nuts? The rocker arms on my engine use regular bolts. That would mean the only possible adjustment is on the push rod side of the rocker. The repair manual shows an adjuster on the bolt as well as the push rod. Seems off to me.

The point here is that engines built above serial number 3633510943 used a guide plate plus a different style rocker retainer than what you have. It seems logical to me that your serial number is before 3633510943.

My serial number is 3602010043. So my engine apparently never had guide plates. I have them on order. Can I use them on this engine? I'm also assuming the engine used bolts instead of studs. That makes the only place I can adjust the lash is at the push rod. I'll have to figure out how that works. I've not even sure it can be adjusted there.

Grrrrrr. So I had to wait forever to get the needed parts. I received them two days ago and attempted to install them today. The push rods are approximately 1/4" to long. E-replacementparts.com has two different numbers listed for my engine. I wrote to them and asked which one to purchase. I purchased their recommended item. If I were one of the seven dwarves, I would not be Happy. I'd be Grumpy. :smiley_aafz:

BTW. I ordered the guide plates even though my engine was built before they were used. I figure having them is probably a good thing.

To bad you didn't think of it. You could have told the seller that the push rods you have are X inches long. Then they could have sent the correct ones or just said that they don't have the correct ones.

Lesson learned with them. You would think if you provide the model and serial number, they could give you the right info.

I completely forgot to post the final result. I received the correct push rods. Everything is back together and running well. Just in time for snow blowing.
