Towing vehicle tire longevity??

Every tire has a date of manufacture on it. Depending on where you buy tires and how quickly they rotate their stock you may want to check and make sure you are getting a tire of recent manufacture. No sense in buying a tire that has been sitting in a warehouse for a long period, especially if you tend to put few miles on the tires and they could potentially go bad from age vs mileage.

Is it that bad on gas?...I bought my wife an '01 Tahoe with 4:10's and a 5.3. It averaged around 16-17 MPG...Mileage is relative too...Depends on what your other daily driver is I suppose.

She now has a Hummer H3 and it gets similar, or slightly worse mileage. I think it has 4:56's in it, at least that's what all of the OEM stickers say. Bought this used.

Ours is the 3/4 ton model with the 6.0 which weighs a LOT more than the half ton models. Best mileage ever was running to Florida last year 4 people aboard full load in cargo area 16.6 mpg average at 65 mph on freeway. Other vehicle is an '04 Lesabre 3.8 V6 gets 31 mpg on freeway at 65 mph with full load of passengers and cargo. BIG difference. Former daily driver was '92 98 Regency hiway mileage on that was same as current Buick.

Great advice, thanks for sharing.

I can not believe you managed 16 mpg out of it. My buddies that have 2500 series GM trucks with 6.0's in them get around 13 mpg.

Freeway mileage is good at 65 mph, bump it up to 70 mph and it cuts the mpg to 14. Engine is turning about 2300 rpm at 65, I keep the tires pumped up to 65 psi. In town mileage decreases to 12.3-13.4. overall.
