Where I live, it's how stuff is pronounced that is weird.

Whitworth, pronounced Witerth
Slaithwaite, pronounced Slowit
Mytholmroyd, no one seems to agree on that one, but it's funny listening to the train conductor call the stop.

Some of those English dialect-based pronunciations have persisted on this side of the pond as well as well, witness Gloucester and Worcester, Mass- Pronounced Glauwster and Wooster.
