Toyota sales off more than GM or Ford

I'm sure you realize that many companies you call "US companies" are really multinational companies producing products everwhere around the world. Examples include Caterpillar, GM, Apple Computer & DuPont. These companies typically produce products in foreign markets to be used worldwide.

I don't believe it's fair to expect every "US Company" to produce every product they make 100% in the USA. Even Toyota outsources to Mexico, China & Asia for a vast array of parts.

Simply put if it's used in the US... then it should be made in the US. It's that simple.

Are you serious?

Are you then saying all lumber used in the USA has to come from trees cut down in the USA? We'd never have enough lumber. Should all consumer electronics used in the US come from the US? There aren't any.

There's millions of products we need that come from offshore.

Does that hold true for all other countries? If they use it in their country, it must come from their country?

The same thing happened in the early 70's with the outboard motor market. My boss worked for Mercury as a pilot. He says they were doing business with the Japanese right and left. They had them making the outboards. 10 years later they are making there own and today Honda, Yamaha, Suzuki, and Tohatsu now lead the market with Mercury and Johnson in their wake.

About 4 years ago it was announced that Boeing had a new foreign competitor with their 747. Their competitor is a competitor that they had entered into an agreement with earlier and now they are making an equivalent, and when asked about it the Boeing spokesman said that they welcomed the competition, what else could they say. The thing about it though I believe Boeing had lobbied several years earlier to be able to enter into an agreement with this other country to make planes for them and now when China produces and sells one of their planes that is one that Boeing don't get to sale, it's really hard to feel sorry for our manufacturing companies that have been so reckless, and their short term greed has set them up for a long term loss, but we need to try to save our domestic manufacturing but these managers shouldn't be allowed to take part in any of the revitalizing of our manufacturing, they have done demonstrated their skills. Just like the banking bail out, that money shouldn't be given to the banks where the ceo's have led them to bankruptcy, it should be supplied to the prosperous banks that have been hurt by this high risk group, and let these sound banks see just what has been done and if any laws have been broken then let those that have done it answer for it. This bail out money should be used only to help sure up the tax payers investments and not the foreign investors. It don't make sense to give the fox that has been guarding the chicken house another full house of chickens when he has already eaten all of the ones that he was supposed to be guarding.

The media up here are some of the worst for their pro- japanese attitudes. They are always slamming GM, Ford, ChryCO, and always find a way to be pro-japanese.

I am so sick of that...

Will you still buy "something better like a Nissan or Toyota in a HD diesel truck" now that Nissan Titans will be built by Dodge? ;):D

No, I will not own another Chrysler anything. The 2500 I had just simply fell apart. I have not given up on GM yet but will not buy another GM truck until they get the chassis up to par and the styling more to my liking. The really took 2 steps backwards in 08 with the Chevy, the GMC is slightly better but not to my liking either.

I would love to see Toyota or any other manufacture get into the 1 ton market and yes, I would get one after a 1-2 year run with good service records. I will never buy the first year of anything.

I own a dodge diesel. :)

You own a Cummins Diesel in a Dodge truck. The engine is great, they have good truck styling, but they lack in many other areas.

I prefer the new styling, GMC especially. I don't care what name you put on it, it is still a Dodge. Will never own one.

It doesn't mater who makes the stuff. It matters how they control quality. Quality is not worker but management problem.

Somebody mentioned Harley. Harley used to send lawyers to suppliers to threaten them and squeeze blood from them when they couldn't meet the price and quality. It didn't improve the quality and eventually bankrupted the company. New owner fired all the lawyers and sent engineers to suppliers to resolve quality problems. I don't own and don't want to own an Harley but I think that quality of Harleys is very good. They keep the typical Harley styling but underneath is quite progressive technology.

One more observation. Many small high-tech companies are started by engineers or scientists. As the company grows it hires an MBA or a lawyer for management position. When one of those guys takes over such company first thing they do they cut R&D or farm it out (in ex.to China or India) because it is very expensive and they don't understand it. The best hard to replace people from R&D or engineering department quit taking a lot of company intelectual property with them. The profit rises instantly but five or so years down the road the company is in trouble falling behind the competition. The guy bails out before it gets really bad, sells his stock option makes himself rich and gets to screw up another company. He updates his resume saying "The profits were good as long as I was there. It got bad only after I left the management." or something of this sort.

In general terms yes... we are talking manufacturing here... not raw materials. Of course not everything we use or buy will ever come from the US. But generally speaking if there's manufacturing jobs then there's money for the public to buy goods. Manufacturing is what makes a country and even states powerful and wealthy. Look how the south has thrived in recent years due to increased manufacturing in the region. While the north has unfortunately had more difficulty.
