Toyota Tundra to get Cummins 5.0L V8 Diesel too

Diamondpilot,

I know 30+ guys with 1/2 tons to 1 ton trucks and little if any of them tow anything substantial with them more than a week a year.

Why the obsession with numbers? HP, GWVR, Payload etc etc.

There is a huge market for trucks that will get the job done (albeit maybe not quickly) without breaking the bank to have the latest and greatest out there.

My previous truck '06 F150 5.4 super crew FX4 had a 6600# tow rating; didn't stop me from buying it because I liked the look and feel of the truck.

My current ride '06 sierra xcab 4.8 4x4 same tow rating; does pull much better than the Ford but I digress...

I truly believe ALL current 1/2 ton trucks have majorly inflated tow numbers IMHO.

Then again I'm sure most will disagree.

My 2007 Tundra 5.7 4x4 can tow just over 10,000 pounds, I never tow that much. But I would prefer the diesel engine for the stronger low end torque.

My 2012 Tacoma 4x4 with the V6 has a 6500# tow rating but I probably wouldn't ever tow more then 5500# with it.

The most that I have towed is just under 6,000 lbs.

Interesting, but id be a bit disappointed if they put a cummins in. Besides brand recognition by those who are not knowledgeable about diesels, there is no reason. It should have a Hino branded engine. In 5 years, Toyota will do for Hino what Dodge did for cummins, that is make them known to the general public.

If they do a Hino engine it should be in a 3/4ton + truck. Maybe adapt the Hino JO5E. Toyota has tons of Diesels in the stable they could use.

Toyota should launch the 3.0L out of the Hilux in a new Tacoma as a compact, efficient, truck.

That could be a very nice vehicle!! Now the big question is will all these new vehicles help cause industry to invest in the supply chain for diesel fuel and drive the prices down??? Some claim the more diesel vehicles will actually reduce fuel prices - I sure hope so!!

Another thing you need to remember is that Toyota has stated that they feel their customers care less about fuel economy and more about having plenty of power. That's why they like their 5.7l engine over a smaller V-6 with turbos. I would be surprised if this goes into anything but a 1/2 ton. I personally think a 3/4 ton designed to give a nice ride would be a big seller to the RV crowd looking for a truck to tow with.
