Tractor backhoe - homemade

Over here thats called red-neck engineering, I can relate to that. Isn't it funny sometimes most times, an answer will just create another question, I've done some 1" tapping and I did it in ONE pass, so why what's this three pass deal to make threads for a bolt?

Curious, I'm asking this at 4:52 pm Sat., wondering if answer will correlate the time posted

Hand tap sets come with 3 taps:

A Taper tap - 8 to 10 threads chamfered for easy thread starting in rough materials.

A Plug tap - 3 to 5 threads chamfered - general use when tapping to bottom of holes is not critical. ( This is the most widely used type of tap. )

and a Bottoming tap - 1-1/2" Threads chamfered - use after threads have been started for tapping to bottom of hole. This is mostly used on blind holes. Usually you can get away by running just the first two taps.

Then you also have the Machine taps. A lot more expensive but it's only one tap and you run it once.

These are the best. Just one pass and it's done, blind holes also. Sadly I don't have all sizes so I had to go with 3 passes. Gotta go buy some tool sets...:)

That's what I'm talking about, one pass and done, sounds like you have new ones on your wish list. And that's a very unusual tap you have, must be across the the pond thing, I never used or seen anything like that, looks like a drill bot with threads.

These are the tap&die's I'm familiar with, 1st is a used replacement set of what my father had 60+ years ago, they was ruined in a shop fire so my son found this old set online of like what I lost. The second set is HF one grade above junk, I get by with them, both sets are the stile I'm used to working with and they go from 1/4"-1" then one set is in metric, and both sets are one pass and done, but the HF sets takes more effort.

Oldpath, when you tap large threads by hand, it takes a lot of horsepower, so they break it up into 3 taps to make it easier on your arms.

When you get in the real big sizes, you need multiple taps so the thread quality is still good. (like 2,3,4")

My taps up to 3/4 are like the ones oldpath05 has and I myself have never seen taps like Bfreaky has, I have never worked in a manufacturing job where taps like that were used, we did not have taps like that at Hydro-Mac or at the semi trailer shop I worked at so I guess I have learned something new tonight which is very interesting to say the least.

Anyway can not wait to see more pics and assembly pics. Brovo.

Wow, what progress! It's been a while since I looked on here, and I am amazed this thread is still growing.

What's happened to all the photos? Looks like the host has gone down :smiley_aafz:

The type of tap BFreaky has is called a Spiral Flute tap. They are great for tapping blind holes as they help with chip evacuation. they're also good for CNC use as you don't need to back them off to break the chip like you do with a 'traditional' tap.

Yes. Right now I'm turning all the bushings. It's a huge job so it takes time, but after I'm done with that there will be significant progress with the assembly. Will post some pictures soon
