Over here thats called red-neck engineering, I can relate to that. Isn't it funny sometimes most times, an answer will just create another question, I've done some 1" tapping and I did it in ONE pass, so why what's this three pass deal to make threads for a bolt?
Curious, I'm asking this at 4:52 pm Sat., wondering if answer will correlate the time posted
Hand tap sets come with 3 taps:
A Taper tap - 8 to 10 threads chamfered for easy thread starting in rough materials.
A Plug tap - 3 to 5 threads chamfered - general use when tapping to bottom of holes is not critical. ( This is the most widely used type of tap. )
and a Bottoming tap - 1-1/2" Threads chamfered - use after threads have been started for tapping to bottom of hole. This is mostly used on blind holes. Usually you can get away by running just the first two taps.
Then you also have the Machine taps. A lot more expensive but it's only one tap and you run it once.
