Tractor
Massey Ferguson GC2310 TLB
Hi
New to forum. I have a broken MF2310. The left front axle assy. is making a clicking sound. It locks the wheel after a bit of travel. If I hold back on the 4wd lever it does not do it. I have a service manual. It seems like it may be the pinion gear. Anyone have any input? Is this a diy repair?
Thanks
MJW

I only know of one other pinion failure in a front diff. It was some time ago.

The owner did do his own repair.

Were you using the 4 WD when the problem started?

I had a pinion gear strip (gc 2310) had growling noise from the front diff in 4wd, quiet in 2wd, might want to check with the dealer for warranty or a bit of help.

Hi ray66v. Yes, I was using the 4wd when the problem first started. I got the MF used and did not check the axle fluid. DUH. When it started clicking I checked and it was low. I filled it to specs. with Hyd,fluid. I did not hear the clicking after that until the wheel suddenly started dragging. I have not worked on tractor axle assemblies but I may try it myself. I know Agco parts are over priced and I would think service is also. I am 100 mi. from the closest dealer.

Hi, brian p1. Thanks for the reply. Mine is noisy in 4 & 2wd. I am going to contact the dealer and see if they are helpful.

It isn't just ACGO parts that are expensive, all tractor, and equipment parts are over priced. I have a Toro fairway mower, any given part for that is about twice what it would cost on my MF.

Jacks Small Engines sells on the internet and discounts parts for this unit.

I would recommend that you don't use the hydraulic fluid in the front diff when your finished with the repair, use EP gear lube. Also consider synthetic oil in there if it gets cold where you live.

If I remember correctly he said MF determined his gears were not sufficiently hardened, and they gave him new ones.

They seem to be less generous now with units that are well past the end of their warranty.

I guess I will know more when I tear it down. Thanks all for responses. Later,

I am the person with the shelled pinion gear, yes it was out of warranty by almost 2 years, was taken to the closest dealer (80) miles, not the selling dealer (out of business).
The M-F tech? on his next visit did warranty it, just cost me gas for 2 trips.
Did NOT need new bearings.
This was only noisy in 4wd.
Get some gear lube in it after rebuild, about a 3 hr job, good luck!
