The difference in definition is simple.
If you own a Model xxx it is a lawn mower.
If I own that same model it is a tractor.

1*A subcompact is right between a compact and a garden tractor.
So explain to us where a compact begins, and why.
And where garden ends. I'm thinking anywhere between a Home Depot/Lowes/Sears lawn tractor to a Kubota L5740 (60HP) and Deere 4720(66HP). Seems like a very wide gap to be calling a SCUT:confused:
OK darnit. ... A garden ends at the field. Compact begins at compatability with the whole line of regular CAT1. If you dont watch out, the garden tractor runs into the SCUT at the edge of the field. :p

OK, I'll play. If at any point in my life I could have lifted it into the bed of my pickup it isn't a tractor! So my old 15HP Murray 40" mower wasnt a tractor. :)

I think a tractor is different than a mower because a tractor isnt 'biased' toward any one particular implement. My Kubota L2350 is a small tractor but it isn't any more suited to bush hogging than it is to plowing, discing or grading the driveway. Even with nothing attached to the 3PH it is still useful for skidding logs and pulling stumps.

My Craftsman riding mower is designed around the primary task of driving the mowing deck. Sure, you can pull a cart or other minor tasks, but it is 'biased' toward that particular implement. Without a mower deck attached its pretty much worthless to me.

Its funny, for the first time ever, I used my 20hp MTD riding lawn mower for a use other than mowing the lawn, or giving my daughter a ride around the yard. We had to seed an arena, and my wife did not want me to use the tractor because the ground is soft, and the R1 ag tires make large divits, so I pulled my grandfathers old agri-fab ground driven seeder behind the mower. It actually worked pretty well, given the fact that it is probably very old, and sat in a barn with dry rotted tires for a long time. I bought new tires for it today, and the hub did not fit, so I used the green fix a flat slime, and it was coming out of the treads, but it worked. I should have just bought tubes. I forget how slow my riding mower seems, but it is supposed to be for mowing I guess. Anyways, I would compare it more to a narrow gas powered golf cart that a tractor, even though it does have a bit of power to it. I forgot how expensive good quality seed was.

What I have are tractors. What my neighbor has are glorified lawnmowers.

That seems to be as useful a definition as any here...

ok i will bite.

like i said before my 110 jd will plow and plant just like a regulare tractor. but i could hook my 88 oliver up to a 3 bottom 14 and run laps around the 110 jd so i mean its a real crap shoot as to how one looks at it. i would much rather plow the garden with the 110 than the 88. easier to turn  but if i got to go plow the back 40 im leaving the mower behind:D. so i can say i deposited my two cents now

Aint that the truth!! We all get tractors to do what would take a lot longer by hand. Whether you look at it rather mowing your lawn with a rider vs push then moving up to a bigger rider to go faster than the smaller, then a 'tractor' that will have the ability to take out things like a shovel to getting a bigger tractor to do a job a smaller tractor would do - but only in more time.

In my opinion my 1979 B7100 I bought new is a CUT, because years ago I hooked up and

used my neighbors disk that he used on his Ford 8n. I had to add weights to the front of

course, but it worked great.

I think my brother's John Deere 2305 is a SCUT, because he can't use any of my implements.
