Don't beat me up cause I don't even have a tractor yet:laughing: I say if you can put it in neutral and push it by yourself on grass, hill or uneven ground its a lawnmower.

I think it's really about the needs of the operator, does a homeowner need a compact tractor to run a tiller for they're small garden.. NO! but they can put one on they're garden tractor and do the job....

When I talk to a person from the city If I was to mention tractor they're thinking something totally different than what I'm talking about, then talk to a big time farmer down the road with a 1000 acres of corn his take on tractor and mine is totally different.
The farmer is the expert. and he is right. He knows a tractor must pull, lift, carry, and spin implements from a pto. Size is not an issue if at least CAT1 3PH is supported. While a tractor can mow lawns a lawn mowing device cannot tractor.

I can't believe nobody has posted an actual definition from a dictionary yet...

Tractor: something that draws or pulls.

Well, here's the entry from the Oxford English Dictionary -- The definitive record of the English language:

c. A traction-engine; a locomotive engine of any kind used for traction of loaded wagons, artillery, etc., on ordinary roads, or for drawing gang-ploughs; also, the frame and steel rope by which a gang of plows is drawn across a field by a traction-engine ( Cent. Dict. Supp.). In mod. use (now the usual sense), a rugged, powerful motor vehicle for drawing farm machinery, esp. one with large rear wheels and an elevated driving seat.

I guess if I can put on some leather gloves and pick the rear end off the ground by the fenders my little green STX38 wasn't a tractor.

I think that the definition is different for everyone on here. The military for example, consideres a duce and a half, and a 5 ton, a tractor. They advertise, and sell them as tractors, and that may be because of the PTO, or it may be easier for them to legally sell these as a tractor, than a road legal vehicle. I think that if it was intended for agricultural use, then it is a tractor. If it was intended for yard use, then it is a lawn tractor. I have seen people argue that only a 100+hp tractor is a true tractor, and I have seen the opposite end of the argument. I think that if you use it like a tractor, then to you it is a tractor, regardless of what anyone else says. I personally always considered a diesel engine, with a PTO, and a 3 point hitch to be a tractor, but there are a lot of tractors that are gas, and without the 3 point, so, hey, what ever floats your boat. The important thing is we can all come together, and have conversations as adults, without our egos getting in the way. I have served in some really bad places in this world in the military, and I have learned that life is way to short to judge people by their title. I give everyone an equal chance.

Mitch

I think some the neatest "tractors" I have seen are these,

There were lots of old tractors that didn't ever have a 3PH, they were drawbar only. So 3PH size isn't a deciding factor.

There were also tracked tractors. CAT sold a lot of them, so tire size isn't always a deciding factor- no tires is still a tractor.

IMHO a MODERN tractors need 3pt hitch and pto to be considered a tractor.

guys that are splitting hairs may quote older stuff not having 3pt or pto and only had draw bars but keeping it real and current thats my two cents.

Tractor needs 3 pt hitch and pto.
Lawmowers, grass cutting garden tractors tht can pull a small buggy/trailer around someones home is a fail...

A TRACTOR is a vehicle specifically designed to deliver a high tractive effort (or torque) at slow speeds, for the purposes of hauling a trailer or machinery used in agriculture or construction. Most commonly, the term is used to describe a farm vehicle that provides the power and traction to mechanize agricultural tasks, especially (and originally) tillage, but nowadays a great variety of tasks. Agricultural implements may be towed behind or mounted on the tractor, and the tractor may also provide a source of power if the implement is mechanised.
