What makes a tractor a tractor and a glorified lawn mower a tractor?

You must have been reading the Mahindra forum!!! There is a raging debate going on over there with some pretty hot orange guys:laughing: Seems the feeling is Mahindra did the unthinkable, muddying the oh-so-clear waters by blurring the lines between SCUT and CUT, so who knows what the difference is between a garden tractor and a tractor tractor is!!

Maybe it is like a Hall of Famer, you know one when you see one??

My definition is simple. My John Deere gt 235 is my lawnmower and my Mahindra 2615 is my tractor. My neighbor has a smaller Home Depot JD and he calls it a tractor. To each his own:)

I think anything that resembles a tractor (either big or small) is a tractor. There are just many categories of tractor, even lawn mowers have there own categories (lawn tractor or garden tractor). then of course you have scut, cut, utility tractor, and full out ag tractor. Then there is also industrial tractors that usually don't have a pto, but they are all really tractors. They even have those 2 wheel tractors that gravely and a couple other manufacturers make.

If Honda can get away with calling a unibody glorified open station wagon a truck, then I guess the term for tractor can be pretty open as well.

Just my opinion, others will vary.

Though it pains me that the stuff sold at Home Depot and Lowe's can be billed as tractors, I guess it's really a matter of function. If you you can mow, pull, rake, till, blow...; it's not a single purpose machine, so I guess it's a tractor.

If it mows grass and pulls a lawn cart it isn't a tractor. If it can power every implement that can be attached to a tractor that's when I consider it to be a tractor.

I agree. I have never understood why my JD mower is called a garden tractor. All it can do is cut grass and it has more plastic than a tupper ware store.

Then tell me, What is a SCUT????:p And who makes them?

A SCUT is a 'sub-compact utility tractor', it is smaller than a 'CUT'(compact utility tractor) sometimes takes narrow 3pt.hitch implements, that don't raise as high as a CUT would, and is low to the ground. somewhere around 5 inches ground clearance. and has hydraulics that spec out much less than CUT series tractors. Shorter wheelbase than a CUT, and usually 44 to 48 inches wide.

Kubota, John Deere, Massey, Cub/Yanmar, New Holland.......and I here Kioti makes one now..........I still need to check the specs on that one.

Not really sure how to best answer your question. Some on here consider Subcuts 'glorified lawn mowers' even though they have hydraulics, 3pt. capabilities, backhoes, mid and rear PTO's, but they are classified as tractors by dealers, and insurance companies, and qualify for tax breaks if you have a farm.

When I bought my JD LA135 from Lowes JD sent me an official tractor owner cap. If JD says its so it is gospel. JD gave me a cap for buying the lawn tractor and I got 2 Kubota caps for buying my L5740 so it must be twice the tractor that the JD is.

By Mahindra standards........it's only a subcut...........sorry.........a glorified lawnmower.:laughing::laughing:

Lawn/garden tractor: An object containing a motor which produces power to execute tasks

Sub-Compact Utility Tractor: An object containing a motor which produces power to execute tasks

Compact Utility Tractor: An object containing a motor which produces power to execute tasks

Utility Tractor: An object containing a motor which produces power to execute tasks

Row Crop: An object containing a motor which produces power to execute tasks

Notice they are all objects that execute tasks and has nothing to do with the size of the machine, if it has wheels or tracks, loader or no, PTO or no, cab or no, need I go on? The classification is just one way of grouping tractors which can be done by the manufacturer, or the consumer. The consumer's responsibility is to learn what they need a tractor to do so they can choose which object containing a motor which produces power to execute taste they need:thumbsup:

I may enter my farm jeep in a local antique tractor show this spring. It has a PTO and 3 point hitch. Willys actually sold a "Jeep Tractor" in the early 50s - http://farmjeep.com/img/ads/farmjeep-farmtractor.jpg and it differed from the farm jeep by leaving off the windshield, headlights and the passenger seat. I don't think they sold many.

Don't think this helps with the definition, just a little fun fact.

That makes a tractor to me a PTO and 3PH. Jeep tractor

IMO, they are ALL tractors. Just in different sizes.

The riding "garden tractors" can still be called tractors.....just small ones.

A "glorified lawn mower" IMO is a ZTR:D

And as I said in the other thread.. I dont care WHAT anyone calls them. Just compare them appropriately. IE: apples to apples. Because I dont think the differences between SCUT and CUT is clearly defined.

The problem arises when a manufacture (kubota and deere) believe their 2x20 and B-series are CUT's and their 10-series and BX are SCUT.

Then another MFG goes out and makes a tractor the EXACT SAME SIZE as the B and 2x20 and somehow, just by calling it a SCUT, they think its okay to compare it to the MUCH smaller BX and 10-series:confused2:

Again, I dont care what they are called. Mahindra can call it a SCUT, but for crying-out-loud, compare it to the right tractors from other brands. "Most" customers are smart enough to look through their BS, and when they do, it makes mahindra look pretty foolish.

Sorry...off topic there. But they are ALL tractors none-the-less. Just different sizes. An S-10 or ranger is STILL a truck, just like a 1-tons and bigger. Just different sizes.
