A good fit tractor (speaking of Deeres here) would be the 670, 770, 790 (all gear transmissions), 755, 855, 4100, 4110, 4115...those are all older machines and the prices should be $4K up to about $12K.

Insufficient data. Especially since your profile doesn't contain regional information.

Where is the property located?
Does it have a house or barn on it?
Will you be living there?
Is it hilly or level, rocky, swampy, wooded, clear, open field?
Short paved drive or long dirt?
Do you want to use it for pasture, haying, row crops, orchard, forestry, aquaculture?

Even Joseph couldn't interpret Pharaoh's dreams until he told them to him.

Roy's suggestions are good. And JD 2210, 2305, and the rest in this series. Also, older botas including BXs, 7000 series. Or any of the smaller CUT/SubCuts from Ford, NH, MF, Mahindra, Kioti, TYM would work just as well.

Best for just mowing/cart pulling/Snow: JD 400 series ($2K - $5K) used.

I have recently bought an old farm with 4acres of land.

Tractor will be used mainly to mow grass but also for other general work
Will be looking at second hand market and have limited budget.

Another post requests more info - that would be very helpful. The tractor size and capabilities is directly related to how long a project will take. You mentioned mowing so lets go there.

A tractor with a 60 inch mower traveling at 3.5 mph can mow 4 acres in 2 hours. Assume that this will not hold true on the first couple of mowings for various reasons, but later when you are accustomed to the tractor and have the high grass under control this will apply. Consult the following site to size your tractor and mower to fit the time you want to spend mowing. A Craftsman will take over 4 hours if it will even make the first pass.

TractorData.com - Mowing with tractors

Consider a front end loader. Think of a FEL as 4 guys that can lift 200 lbs each at your beck and call. If you are a senior like I am you will quickly appreciate the abilities of an FEL. Four guys cannot move as much dirt as quickly as I can with my FEL.

Consider NEW for this reason. I recently acquired a B3200 (18K) on my signature. No money down, 0% interest for 60 months and $300 per month. The tractor has a warranty and I can buy an extended warranty anytime before the 1st year is up. My 5 year old B7510 has never failed to start.

If you have limited time to work on the farm my suggestion is buy a little larger than what you really think you need and buy something reliable. You don't want to spend half your time repairing before you can get to work. If you are a mechanic you may be ok with that. I prefer to get work done.

If you are going to farm, garden, clear land or go into a building project there are several implements that can help you do those jobs.

List your projects for more detailed advice.

How much of your property are you going to mow? I keep about 1.5 acres mowed and use a ride on, keeps my 135 free for other work on the property.

I think you would be best fit with a 1 series JD tractor. Like the 1026r. Great little machine. Have no experience with them or the Kubota B (the comparable) but they are supposed to have some better features like operator comfort, 3PH control, lights and the best feature of the quick connect mid mount mower. A 2000 series Deere will do above and beyond what you need - buts it always good to get more than what you need:thumbsup:

BTW, a fel (front end loader) is a must for any tractor.

My advice is a little different from everyone else as in foresight this is how I would do it now. Buy the biggest baddest tractor out there with the largest implements you can find. You soon figure out you need more land. Easier to convince the other half to get more land bigger house than vice versa good luck

Something along the lines of a B7100 would be perfect IMO.
