Steve,

I agree this is the classic sign up and not appear/reply for a week or more - then other first posters w/o any feedback in few hours raise a stink..

Wait and see

Tractor will be used mainly to mow grass but also for other general work
Will be looking at second hand market and have limited budget.
If your on a budget you might want to look at a ford 3000 or 3600. They are very tough old tractors but if something goes wrong there are tons of aftermarket parts available. You should be able to find one in good to great shape in the $3000 to $4000 range.

I think you would be best fit with a 1 series JD tractor. Like the 1026r. Great little machine. Have no experience with them or the Kubota B (the comparable) but they are supposed to have some better features like operator comfort, 3PH control, lights and the best feature of the quick connect mid mount mower. A 2000 series Deere will do above and beyond what you need - buts it always good to get more than what you need:thumbsup:

BTW, a fel (front end loader) is a must for any tractor.
I think the JD1026r is comparable to the BX series Kubota. The B series is larger.

I have recently bought an old farm with 4acres of land.

I have very little knowledge of tractors and would like advice on a suitable tractor to buy. Have been looking online and spoken to friends who have suggested I look at kubota.

If your budget is really limited, check out older iron like my 1951 Farmall Super A. Bought it several years ago for $1300. Came with 3 point hitch (Farmall's of that vintage usually had 2 point hitches), a mid-mount 6-ft wide sicklebar mower and a 5-ft rear scraper blade). I formerly was a CHP tractor for mowing highway ROW.

Small as it is (about 16 hp pto), it can do impressive work--like running a hay baler. This video documents a Super A restoration project and shows it running a baler (about 6 minutes into the video).

I just went through this, but I have 14 acres. I found it more prudent to buy new because of the used cost was only a couple grand difference. I am very picky about maintaining my equipment and didn't want a poor maintained machine. In turn I didn't have 25k to buy a new hst so I decided to get a brand new 3005 w/loader and counter weight was all in at 17k cash sale. Was a great deal and if you like a clutch like I do, check out the 3005. It's build like a tank.

Unless you are going to dig up stumps, trenches (you can rent a trencher) or foundation work I would not get a unit with a backhoe, for the price difference you can get a Nice small/medium compact tractor and quite a few implements to work with, around 30-35hp size, Kubota's B3300 or L3200 with a good finish mower out back, landscape rake, box blade etc. Or a similar sized Kioti, Bobcat, John Deere, Mahindra, LS etc, all make similar sized units that will do all that you will ask and more.
Private used units can be had for fair prices, but depending on your mechanical abilities, and how well the unit was maintained you could score a deal, or get a nightmare. Dealers many times have good solid used units, many with low hours and maybe even some warranty. Financing can also be arranged easier on a used unit at a dealer that can be on your own.
New unit is a good choice depending on your finances, many Manufactures are offering deal now that disappear in the spring or summer when sales tend to be better. Some offer deals in the spring/summer to push sales numbers at peak season, so really you have to shop around to find out your best road to take.

Yes, my apologies. Typing to fast without thinking. BX to the 1 series and a B to the 2x20 series:thumbsup:

I just bought a JD 670 a compact utility tractor but initially had my heart set on a Kubota. My brother gave me great advise - get on and off the tractor from each side after driving it. I found some great deals on a number of tractors, but found I was banging the &)(; out of my knees and shins. When I got on the 670 it fit me.
I have found I can't put things (tape measure, grease rag etc) in my right pocket or I hit the FEL control when I slide around in the seat when bouncing around the property.
I suggest walking around your property and make a list of things you need to get done. I have narrow trails on my partially treed 4.5 acre property and 670 easily maneuvers. I also have over 400'feet of road way my neighbors do not help maintain.
At 18hp it has proved adequate to my projects - moving gravel , digging, moving logs& wood, scraping & raking, bush whacking. I bought it to save my back and finish incomplete projects. I also figured in could hire some one if a bigger machine was Needed for a major yet unplanned projects.
Also keep in mind you will be spending money on extras after the fact - tow chains, hooks , small trailer to move material and options to rent , big trailer if your going to move it - or hire some one .......
You may want to get some wood pallets to set your attachments on to keep them out of the dirt.

Welcome and best of luck In your search You will find a lot more things you can do once you get it home
