Tractor Lust...VS...I Don\'t Need More...

For a couple years I felt that I needed more tractor. I see now I was suffering from Tractor Lust.

Now I feel like I got exactly what I really should have for my needs! As far as the a larger size tractor goes. Although, like at least a few others here, I did also buy a smaller tractor to keep the larger one company.

So, what about you? Still in the lust phase? Know you made a mistake and should have gone bigger/smaller to begin with?

Come on, bare your soul! Might help the new guy who is thinking about his first tractor... Tell us how much property, what tractor, and if you are happy or expect a change in the future.

Bill,
I'm probably always going to keep looking at the new machines, and wishing I could get another one.
But when it comes right down to it, My DK 35 is a very good fit for my 15 acres and can take care of most anything I want to do or plan to do in the foreseeable future.

I love my B2410, but I still check out the power-trac site every few months. Think the Kubota would mind a companion that bends in the middle? Of course if I buy one my wife will have me sleeping with the tractor.

I've got 3 acres...about an acre in lawn, 150' drive with a fair sized parking area, an acre wooded and about an acre of power line right-of-way that was heavily overgrown with brush (few trees though).

The first tractor I looked at was the Kubota BX2200. We couldn't quite swing the 13K dollars (at that time), so I found a Deere 670. That 670 was a really good fit! Maybe a bit larger (physically) then I needed, but the horsepower was right on. It even ran a 5' rotary cutter through that heavy brush quite well.

Then I decided I needed a chipper. The 670 didn't have the PTO horsepower required (of course, it was also 4 PTO HP less then the minimum recommended for that 5' cutter), so I started looking for more PTO HP, but not necessarily a larger tractor.

I found a really nice, very low hours Deere 790 in Virginia. The deal was good, so I bought it (with the 670 was part of the deal).

In retrospect, I probably should have kept that 670. It was smaller (physically and power-wise) then the 790. The 790 is really overkill for my acreage.

But, as one poster said, I need the land my tractor deserves!

I have been considering a new tractor. I want more lift height for the FEL. I would also like to have the added lift capacity of a larger tractor.
What keeps me from doing the change?
Not having the ability to use my current FEL attachments.
Not having to do my multiple outlets and valves over again.
72" MMM is different on the L series. Only has 2 caster wheels. This makes it hard to move when removed from tractor.
I would need a larger trailer and truck to tow a larger tractor.
The B3030 looks good but does not offer enough features to warrant the added expense.
Beyond that, I still keep looking at a L3430 every time I'm at the dealer. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Henro, I have about 75 acres in Mississippi. I get off work fairly early and I really enjoy the 4330 Kubota with the cab. Staying warm is just as important as staying cool to me. I am glad I upgraded to this. I would love the tooth bar though and a back hoe. I would not take back my money for this..teddy

Roughly 10 acres, a few acres of open land, some heavy woods, some lightly wooded. . . Kubota B2910 (TL and occasional B), New Holland TC24D, Ventrac 3000. All 3 have loader buckets, but the Ventrac only lifts about 12" high. The NH and Ventrac both are for mowing. I also buy and restore and then sell antiques although I'm in between projects now but I've got boxes of parts to start my own.

I also have 6 acres at my office, I moved my Cub Cadet up there when I bought the Ventrac; I use a trailer to move the bigger tractors up there as needed for occasional landscaping chores.

As for getting a bigger tractor, there are some times when I would seriously consider a 40+hp machine. I looked at the 40 & 45hp Cub Cadets and liked them, good price, but I don't want to go back to gears. If I go bigger, the Kubota B2910 will be traded in, possibly for a larger Kubota or a NH.

Now for the reality check, I could do it all with the NH TC24 or the Kubota B2910. Heck, if I only wanted to maintain the lawn and do some very light work, the Ventrac would actually do it all.

In reality though, my 790 is perfectly matched to my 10 acres. I can only say that because it's the only tractor I've used on my place and it works just fine. But that's today's snapshot. Things could change...

Right now I'm doing landscape projects, bush hogging about 6 acres and snow removal on 750 feet of drive. Finish mowing is light and tasked to my little Craftsman lawn tractor. If we ever do more finished lawn I'll likely lust after a Dixie-Chopper (OK, I already am). Of all the tractor-related tasks I enjoy finish mowing the least. The Dixie Chopper would get that task done the fastest, from what I can tell so far.

Beyond that I lust over a new truck, new camper, new table saw, lathe, barn, welder, generator, wood shop, pool table, hot tub, fixed gear bike, swimming pool, garden and countless other things. There is far too much lust available to limit it to tractors /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

It waxes and wanes. 155 acres of hardwood forest and I sure could use a larger tractor with more oomph to get at some of the distant lumber or to support a larger backhoe with a longer reach. But Clementine has been a real trooper all these years and has yet to let me down. So I guess I can't complain...much.
