Tractor or Skid Steer?

RobertN,

Thanks for the ref - gotcha. Have seen these before, just didn't know the terminology. Sorta looks like a trackhoe mated with a skid steer, and, viola.

I could use a clam-shell, but frankly the problem would be the weight it could lift. Plus big bucks price wise (at least for me). The emply clam-shell weighs 700-800 pounds empty (if I remember correctly). That would only leave 1000 pounds max for lift (and require a real heavy counter weight).

I think all CUT loaders (at least the majors) offer a skid steer compatable mount for the loader arms and not too expensive considering the extra flexibility since you can use almost any skid steer implement. Literally takes less than a minute to drop the bucket, hook up pallet forks (or whatevery) But you already know how handy the skid steer hook up is. The switch hitch is really spiffy - let's you hook up 3pt implements, move trailer's around etc. I don't have much room right now, and with the ball on the switch hitch I can park the gooseneck trailer anyplace (lot's easier than with the truck).

Anyway, thanks for the terminology info.

JEH

PS Hate to tell you this, but no matter how much HP you have, there are times when you could always use more. Guess that's the way it goes. Every time I use the BH, wish I had something that could handle a bigger (longer) hoe. I suspect you can do about anything with your KUB, just takes a bit longer, etc. The psi with R4s isn't too bad (though nothing like the tracked ones). Bet your KUB is probably less than 20 psi (M/L). That's a pretty lite footprint.

I just wanted to jump back in to thank everyone for their comments and suggestions. After almost two years of researching, debating and dreaming I finally settled on a piece of equipment that I didn't even know existed when I started looking at tractors and I certainly wouldn't have considered save for the input from members of this forum.

When I started this process, I was convinced a BX22 would probably work out fine for my needs. However, the nearly unanimous feedback I received to a post I made describing the jobs I hoped to accomplish was "think again." And I did.

I looked at much larger machines that, due to my being very partial to having a good backhoe, carried a correspondingly large increase in price. And I realized that, at least in my case, the decision to purchase this type of equipment for non-commercial use was not realistically going to made on the basis of cost savings. Rather, this is about what I want "to do" versus "to have done." In the end, figuring costs and time, it'd almost always be cheaper to pay to have the jobs done. But it wouldn't be nearly as much fun...

So, I looked at full-sized TLBs. Actually, almost bought one on a couple of occasions. But, again, members of this forum cautioned that a full-sized TLB, an inexperienced operator and reasonably steep hills was probably not a good combination.

I then debated, in this thread, whether I'd just be better off getting a skid-steer... and if money weren't an object I'd probably pick up one of the tracked versions and a bunch of attachments.

While I was waiting for the day to come when money wouldn't be an object, I ran across an ad for JD 450-C trackloader with a backhoe. After a flurry of additional research, including reading every post up here that had "Deere" and some combination of 450 in it, I sent off some cash...

Earlier today it showed up and I sat, for the first time, in the seat of a tractor larger than a lawn mower. I stayed in that seat for several hours and am now the proud owner of several new holes in the earth... some of which were actually intentional.

It looks like the trackloader will be a great match for the type of jobs and property I have. And it wouldn't have happened without your help. I can't thank you guys enough...

- Mark

Depending on the jobs to be done, size of property, etc., some of us tend to recommend new shoppers move up a size or two from their original thoughts, but . . . . how many sizes up would that be? /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif I know you're gonna have fun with it, but I don't think it'll mow very well. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Puter, So I have been reading this informative post and everyone's input. Your situation caught my eye as I have similar property and are trying to decide where to spend our money...most bang for our buck. 40 acres 2 ponds one about 200 ' x 75' its about 2-3' deep and want to deepen it. There is a lot of forest that has never been cut 70-100' trees. There are quite a few trees down that need to be cut up and moved and site prep for home built into the side of a hill no foundation, drainage trenches, driveway, trails and pasture. We are looking at excavator for home site purpose but honestly I think it might be best to rent that and get a track loader for all else. I am curious are you happy with your purchase of the JD450C for your needs? Its quite a bit heavier than the track loader. We do have some soft loam soil areas. What didn't you like about it and if money were not an issue would you have gone with the track loader with the myriad of attachments available?

Thirteen year-old thread?

Yep, old threads get resurrected a lot due to searching for info. Just because it is old doesn't mean it is no good. Sometimes they have just the info the searcher was searching for. :)

Here is the JD450C track loader that puter bought:

Probably won't hear from puter, last on here in 2012:
