Tractor Pto shaft

I was trying to replace the pto seal on my 2015 Mahindra 4540 and when I got the outer cover off and pulled on the seal the entire shaft came out of the tractor. When I got it cleaned and ready to put back in the tractor it would not align and slide in. Is there a secret to reinstalling the shaft.

Not familiar with that brand but if it's like my Kubota M's, there is an internal coupler (splined sleeve) that the pto stub has to engage and on mine, there is an internal snap ring the retails the stub.

Had mine apart before and you have to align the stub with the sleeve before the stub will seat fully.

Of course I had the benefit of the shop manual to explain it.

I ordered a shop manual last night so I should have one in a few days but my tractor is sitting in a friend's driveway. What I thought would be a 15 minute fix, well Murphys law changed that.
