I wasn't going to post today, but it's my 1 year anniversary of the delivery of my tractor (see siggie)!
@ Egon:
So with the snatch block, uh, I'll confess ignorance. Obviously I wrap rope or cable around it, then I can take my choice of lowering from above or pulling from below (mechanical advantage of 2 on the force). But then, what do I pull with? I have a 1500/3000 lb hand operated racheting rope haul, but I was trying to figure a way to use 18 hp of diesel (or 14 at the PTO) to save me'poor arms!
So I'm still faced with reeling a cable in & out with some type of tractor-mounted winch, or just hooking up the cable in some fashion and driving the tractor the necessary distance - or are you saying that the snatch block could also be anchored and used to change the direction of rope travel as I need to make the pull? That'd make sense, I may just have answered my own question!
Anyway, I've enjoyed my sporadic first year of posting, and my first year of sporadic tractor usage, and look forward to many more (and more frequent seat time)!

Technically speaking,a snatch block is just a block with one side that can be opened so the rope can be placed on the sheave without threading it from the end of the rope. Like this.
Here is a nice page that explains the various methods to achieve mechanical advantage using pulleys. SUMMERLIFT - Pulley Basics
And a pretty picture....
