I've been using an old tarp to cover my new ck35 with loader. I'm only kidding myself to say I'll build a pole barn or lean to this year. Winter will be here before long. I'm thinking of the easy way out. Tent!
Looking at the ShelterLogic at TSC. ShelterLogic® 3-in-1 Shelter Multi-Purpose Shelter and Storage, 10 ft. x 15 ft. x 8 ft. - Tractor Supply Co.
How is it for size, durability etc?
Will it get me through a few years?

That would be a lot better than a tarp that traps moisture under it. How windy is it where you are at? Wind always takes its toll on those. I would keep the snow buildup off and I think it would be fine for a few years.

I made a tractor house out of 1-1/2" sch. 40 PVC. I drove the posts in the ground about 1' or so, a few 45* fittings to make the A frame, took (2) 3/4" x 1" boards and screwed them to the top of the A frame to tie everything together, used those rubber sided steel washers to screw the tarp to the PVC and that was it. I usually get 3 yrs out of the southeast side before I have to change it out for another $20. Its been there for 6 yrs now and it works perfect for keeping the snow and rain off my machine on the cheap. You can't put to many washers and screws to hold the tarp down.

That version looks like it will work well. I have one that looks like a carport. Anchoring down is the most important part in my area.

It would be around here too. I can't imagine any fabric structure lasting the winter here. The wind-speed instrument on the roof of our house indicates above 60 MPH several times every winter and has gotten to 80.

On the other hand, I have learned to keep a tarp on my woodpile by keeping the tarp tight to the wood, with lots of padding (remnants of old tarps) on the sharp corners, and tied down to a continuous ring of sections of old power poles.

Do you have a natural wind break i.e. trees or low dry spot it could be placed in?

Is 10'x15' large enough?

How much snow do you get? The one I bought had a snow load of zero.
Wind is a big issue with these.

I had a Shelter Logic in my backyard for 3-years...bigger than the one you linked too, and it had a roof that really was not pitched much at all. We get a considerable amount of snow in NH and I was impressed with its durability. After 3 years it was showing some wear, a few small tears and sections of tarp that were over a support bar had "stretched" a bit...but overall it held up great. Ended up selling the boat we stored under it so I gave it away...but I feel I got my moneys worth out of it over 3 years. I'd get one again for sure.

I would pull heavy snow off of it still though. There were plenty of times it built up but Id always get out and pull it off the top, never let it get TOO heavy.

I get lots of snow, I'll keep the snow load off as much as I can. Do the shelter logic tents ever go on sale at TSC?

CityFarmer,
I sure would like to see photos of your shed.

I did pretty much the same thing... covered the tractor with a tarp with plans of building a more substantial shelter before too long. Using a tarp directly on the tractor has a few drawbacks. In the northeast, it gets wet under the tarp and stays wet. You'll eventually get moisture in your gauges. Also, a tarp covered with snow is difficult to remove from the tractor and, if the snow is heavy enough, the tarp can rip from the weight as you try to remove it.

I searched for fabric shelters for a while. I decided that I wanted one 20' long, 12' wide, 8' high. My tractor with loader attached is 14'. I wanted enough room to leave the rear blade mounted for snow removal, and also some room to work on the tractor if I needed to do that in the rain or snow.

Shelter Logic fabric covers will last a few years. The lifespan seems to depend on how much wind they're subjected to. The covers wear through where they rub on the frame. More wind = more rubbing = more wear. The covers are not difficult to replace, but a new cover can cost as much as you paid for the shelter. Farm Tek makes shelters that will last much longer. Their cover warranties are around 15 years, if I remember correctly. They also cost 3x-4x more. You get what you pay for. You can also order the Farm Tek shelter with more ribs to handle snow load. If I was going to use a fabric shelter for more than a couple of years, I would pay up for the Farm Tek / Clear Span one.

I just happened to come across a Shelter Logic in the dimensions I wanted in the back corner of the local BJs on sale cheap, so I grabbed it! It was worth it and I'm glad I did.

Based on my experience, I would suggest: Checking the door height to make sure that your tractor will fit through it. An 8' high shelter does not have an 8' high door! My ROPS barely cleared the roll up door and I had to hold the rolled up door up with my hand and creep forward as the ROPS passed under it. Also consider getting a shelter that is longer and/or wider than you think you need. Once you have a place that's out of the weather, you start thinking about how many implements you can fit in there, too. :D

The first winter I had it, it was so great to be able to get to and around the tractor without snow coming over the top of my boots while I struggled with a tarp weighted down by heavy snow.

The second year I had it, I put down a base of crushed stone and hung a string of construction lights along the ceiling rib. It was almost like a garage in there. Oh, and DEFINITELY get the rear gable vent, even if you have to order it somewhere else. The shelter fabric does not breathe and it will "rain" inside there if there's any humidity at all. The louvered vent stopped that problem completely. That one little vent (12" x 18") makes all the difference.

As was already noted, you have to knock the snow off the top after each storm. That's easy to do from the inside with a flat snow brush. And do make sure to anchor it to the ground. That helps it keep its shape in high winds and prevent it from collapsing.

IMO, the fabric shelters can be a great temporary or longer-term solution if you understand their limitations.

great post f1520, thanks

Since that shelter has a round top it would work. Do NOT get one that has a Gambrel type roof, it won't hold up to snow load.
I have a much larger S. Logic building that is protected from wind by my shed. I bought it direct from S.L. It's about 30' long, 10'?W, and has probably an 8' door opening. I can, very carefully, drive my DK-40 with ROPS canopy into one end of the shelter to move implements in or out. It's lasted me at least 3 years so far, no problems.

The Shelter Logics do go on sale at TSC. As F1520 said, watch the height. At my previous house I had a 12w x 12h x 24L Barn style. Never had a problem with snow. Just went out after each storm and used a foam snow pusher you see used at car dealerships. Snow would slip right off. I used it for 3 years, and ended up selling it to the people we sold the house to. Definetly get the vent! Makes a big difference.

I went with a 18'x26' metal carport. Got it 8' tall and bought the "engineered" version that comes with the extra bracing. I think I'm in for $1300 including the load of gravel to spread under it. Later when I build on the land, I can move it somewhere else, enclose the sides, sell it, etc. I think it was a great investment.

In investigating my options post tractor purchase I looked at all the fabric shelters and such and came to the conclusion that a metal carport is the best option for the same reasons you did. Depending on the size you need they can be had for as little as $600 installed. With a CK sized tractor you could probably get by with the $600 12x21....

Do you have a link for the $600 metal carport Nova?

Pricing varies a bit state to state it seems. $700 in PA but the exact same building in AL is $600.

From what I can tell there's a bunch of different places to buy them though. A little google-fu might find you a better deal.
