Could be ;).

I'd low ball 'em and see what happens. Maybe that goofball rookie who's on the Shipping Wars TV show will put in a bid that you can live with:D.

Shipping may be a moot point because when I called about the tractor, I was told that someone was supposed to go look at it this evening. It was not advertised online so at least I know that anything I said here didn't potentially "give it away" and cause me to miss out. It does however remind me that loose lips sink ships so I will be absolutely silent the next time one comes along, especially if it is advertised online.

Anyway, I made a very strong offer over the phone, pending the condition of the tractor being as described, so only time will tell.

I don't think anyone could have sunk a ship from your "200 mile from anywhere" description, so it was probably just a local or somebody they knew going to look it over, unless it is advertised somewhere. Good luck with it, David from jax

You're probably right, it had to have been a local that beat me to it. It wasn't advertised online so it would have been impossible to "sink the ship", but what if it had been online? It wouldn't take a stretch of the imagination for someone to look at my general location, put two and two together, then search all the popular sites like craigslist for the "deal" that was mentioned. I've seen it happen before on a popular truck forum. Nothing that happens on the internet surprises me and in this case, I am taking no chances. I hate having to be that way but when it comes to buying and selling, noone is your friend.

I did learn something however, with regard to shipping and transportation, I wasn't fully prepared for the unexpected, now I am. And if anyone is curious, I was able to determine that shipping/transportation would have cost me approximately 2-3 dollars a mile, depending on the distance and carrier.

At any rate, this will probably end up being just another fish story about the one that got away, but there is always next time. Where there was one, there will eventually be another, it's simply a matter of time.

Watch out for "scam's".
If it's to good to be true it most likely is.

Absolutely! I'm always on high alert for scams and shady sellers who try to lie and hide things. In this case, I am reasonably certain it was legit, I was simply too late. It happens.

My method for scam prevention is simple, I will only meet a seller in person and inspect the tractor before paying them a single dime. No checks, no wire transfers, no escrow services, and no deposits. And if shipping/transportation is required, I will make prior arrangements for it myself.

Add , get a bill of sale and loaded on your transport prior to laying the cash on him.

Very true, a bill of sale is an absolute must have item or there will be no sale. And one should never pay a seller, then return to get the tractor at a later date, because it just might not be there when you return. It's one of the reasons I would make prior arrangements for shipping/transportation, if needed. The logistics and timing can be a pain, but it's the safest method to use.

What's the old saying... Posession is 9/10's of the law.
