Jim you know the extra at "our" TSC was not for the pail., it was for all the great service and expert advice we get from the staff.

What? They have staff? ;)

EDIT: Actually, my niece works at the TSC in Denton and loves it. I'm looking forward to the new AgVantage store opening in Decatur. I always worried about being run over by a gravel truck when going into or out of the old one.

TSC is largely imported crap (some good crap, some cheap crap). The dollar is at an all-time low. I ain't no economist, but I'd bet in 2002 dollars gas would be about 2.25/gal.

If you think the dollar's weak now, just wait till this government bail-out of the mortgage/housing idiots gets underway!

I find Tractor Supply stores to be wildley independant in their service offerings and stockings. Thank goodness the one I like is next to a gas station and grocery store.

Now all I need is a bank and an IRS handout, or is it an OFHEO check? And I am all set. Cash, Convenience and Consumables!

Now,I normally wouldn't jump in but the price of hay pulled me. $20 for a round bale? How about $9.80 + shipping for a 6lb "bunny bale"?

"Premium Western Timothy Grass Hay"

This fella trucks it in from all over the Country and pays high school students $1 per bale. He has a setup similar to a log splitter that compresses the hay as they pile it in.

I'm all for caring for animals but a $1.63 per pound for hay? Geeze.

Halloween bales? For decorations only? Small square bales?? Have you seen them? The price? Last year I saw them advertized for 10 bucks a bale. I thought they were plastic or something. Unreal

Now may be a good time to get into the hay business if you can afford the fuel. A guy I know is converting his operations to bio-diesel. He brews his own fuel. I guess it is coming to that now. More self reliance.

Every now and then, I stumble on to a bargain at TSC. Did so this morning. I needed a motor to replace a tired one on a small cement mixer I bought off of ebay. It's a Briggs & Stratton 8.5hp horizontal shaft with a 6-1 gear reduction box on the side. Local B&S wholesaler quoted me $510 delivered. Another retailer in the area said $550 and 6 to 8 weeks lead time. While I was in TSC, I spotted the exact same motor sitting on the shelf, with last years price on it! Tax and all, $457. And I don't have to wait.....well....I don't have to wait except for getting someone to work at the cash register

No wonder they haven't sold the motor yet. No one in their right mind would shop at this place! It's the only store I've ever heard of that fired a store manager because he was (and I quote) "BEING TOO HELPFULL TO THE CUSTOMERS"!

But where else are you going to go for poor treatment by store personel who'll gladly ignore you as you shop through their inferior grade products with ridiculously high prices?

Farmwithjunk: thats how I use TSC too...for bargains but not 'staples'. If I need a particular part or hardware I go to my NH dealer or JD down the road or to the coop. I did recently buy a 60gal IR compressor from TSC and it was a really good deal! Saved $70 buying it there and didnt have to travel as far.

Odd but the TSC in a neighboring town is better stocked than in my town. Not sure why though. Should mention that staff in all the local TSCs really do try to be helpful.

We just got a TCS here in Maine. I anticipated it for months but was sadley dis-appointed. The prices are no different than most other places in the area. A lot of their stuff is junk, cheap, but junk. I asked to have some parts ordered and was basiclly told that $10.00 worth of parts wasn't worth their bother, although they sugared it up a little. I ordered the same parts through my John Deere dealer and actually paid less than TCS was going to charge plus the salesman dropped them off at my house on his way home from work. I know where my money is going next time. I try to support local business and TCS has reminded me why.

The only thing cheap around here is hay. I see hundreds of nice round bales still in the fields as I drive to work each day.

jinman,

In Maine the Legislature outlawed those big round bales of hay. They determined that even cows deserve one "square" meal a day!
