Good Jerry, glad you saw it. I mention that so the argument about HST owners being the only one's with the "superior" transmission attitude isn't necessarily so. Your post/opinion on hydrostatic tranmsissions I find to have valid points or at least arguable, Pauls second hand knowledge from what appears to catastrophic failure among his neighbors sounds unprecidented and exagerated and pointless to debate.

PS. I tend to favor the manual transmission in a truck as well, not from a durability standpoint, but just from the pleasure it seems to give me using it. I can't say the same thing about my International 454D tractor although the transmission is really quite good and much quicker to shift then just about any other full manual tranny.

Doug,
I don't know if this was directed at me or my reply button was just convenient. I don't have a problem with want-to-be tractor experts using hydros or even farmers as far as that goes, if the tractor fits their application. But I am on my tractor every day and it has to be dependable and comfortable to me. I am sure that Most things that I do could be done with a hydro, but I just don't like them. As most of you, pro-hydro people, I can use which ever one that I prefer and that fits what I do. I JUST don't like the way hydros operate.

Jerry ... I just hit the last reply button ... take no offense. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

But that dribble is out there and its losing it's humor. /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif Perhaps there should be a FarmerByNet site (Hobby Farmers KEEP OUT!).

There are conflicts once in while between real ones and want to bes. Most of the time, we get over it and go on. Experience is arrived at with time. You have to put in the time to get experience.

When I was 5 years old, my mom 'shared' a cigar with me when the gnats were _horrible_ in the garden & she needed to get some garden work done - no spray in the house, no breeze at all. The smoke helped somewhat.

That is the only thing I have ever smoked, ever, in my life.

That seems to be the nicest of your rather mean spirited comments towards me in what is generally a real good discussion here of people voicing their opinions & experiences of tractor useage.

I do not know why? I don't mind being called on any facts I have wrong, but do not understand you at all here.

Was at the Case dealer for planter parts today - another old Hydro tractor there in the shop with the hydro removed for repairs. The trannies are nice to use, but they do come at a cost. This is a fact.

If people wish to buy them that is great, & I may well own one some day myself. They can be real handy, almost a must-be, for some jobs. It's not like they are poison or something, sheez! /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif Just folks should know what they are buying is all. Convienience often comes at a price. It would be poor of me to not point out that price when someone asks.

Your examples of fleet purchases needing to be auto trannies is a good example of inexperienced people in high-turnover jobs not working will with equipment, not an example of auto trannies being more durable than manual. The new hires just trash a tranny system they do not understand or are not familar with....

Buy & use what you want tho, as I've said in all of my messages. I just prefer people to be informed. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif And, enjoy life, have some fun. Don't see a need to get so wound up over the little things in life. Relax. Your opinion is important too, and helps all. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif This should just be fun, not a bunch of namecalling. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif Ok? /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Keep a little perspective folks! It is important to have these discussions so that people who are looking into it can figure out what is best for them, but it's a drivetrain design, not a religion! It's no secret that I prefer gear for various reasons, some inherent in the design, other having more to do with implementation, but I can certainly see where hydro has its advantages. There might be situations were I would choose one.

If you have found a machine that you are happy with, then that is what is important. It is not necessary to have everyone else agree with you to validate your purchasing and decision making prowess!

"not a religion"

Well put. I'd say we already have enough "religious" conflict in the world right now!

I like to shoot a traditional recurve bow. I readily acknowledge that a modern compound bow is superior in just about every way. Doesn't matter to me. I just like the old traditional way. Same thing with "traditional" blackpowder arms vs modern in-lines. It often just comes down to personal preference. There's really no reason for name calling or even for the heated debate, but there never seems to be a lack of either when these "personal preference" issues come up.

To each his own.

At the JD dealership we can't sell gear compacts worth crap. In fact I am the only one who orders a straight gear tractor from us. Not having a hydro hurts resale value in compacts and garden tractors. I like geared tractors with metal fenders cause that's what I learned on and I don't like to spend the extra money for a hydro. It would even be weird for me to get a power reverser as I would still be going for the clutch 9 times out of 10 to stop and change gears. I don't see any old hydros in for repairs in larger ag tractors they must not be that common here so I can't comment on that. I have seen small compacts with gear and hydros in for repair. I think everyone should just buy what they want, it's your money. Both are good transmissions but for me it is easier to get a feel for the machine with a clutch. After driving hydros I can see they are handy to have in some cases. A new combine would be worthless with a geared transmission these days. Rambler said he has a geared combine so it has to be from around the 1970s and if it's a Deere it would be a 6600 or 7700 model and the like. I have driven these and they are a pain compared to the newer hydro combines from the 1980s and up. I for one will never give up gears until I am too old too drive them like when I am 80 or so and my legs are not as good. But for now I will stick with the ole collar shift 990 and syncro 5320.
