If you're talking about a glide shift tranny - it would be helpful to know what your technique would be for backing up a slope with a 7' foot rake on the 3PH to a wooden fence line would be.

The intent here was to drop the rake at the base of the fence to drag down the slope.

I usually have trouble coasting up slopes myself. /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

Thats what I really like about HST. It's ability to precisely control position. I have a 8' Harley landscape that I can get right on a fleas lip. As it loads up with debris, I can instantly back off on forward movement and allow the power rollers to do their job. It is truely an ideal setup. I used it on a gear tractor previously which was also very good, I just find that it works even better on HST. Was that an anti-gearite comment? /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif So sorry.

Sure! A hydro would be wonderful for that. How much of your total tractor time do you spent backing up a rake to a fence?

I mean really... In your first post you were talking about how sore you leg was from loader work. If you had used that transmission that you had properly your leg would be that sore. Now were talking about a task (the rake fence thing) that is done a few percent of the total hours present and future on your tractor.

11 hours is not a lot of time to become experienced at running a piece of equipment.

I've nothing against a hydro. As I mentioned when my new TN is paid off I'll get a small 20ish HP HYDRO tractor, it will most likely be orange (at this time any ways).

Let me take a wild stab at this.

Some people like hydros, some people like gears and some people like both. Then there's the ones that want to convince everyone else that their way is the right way.

Is this an assumption on my part or does it have any validity?

I second that. I like one thing, but it isn't bad that you many like something different.

Rowski ... I'll give you the benefit of missing information. This was a rental machine for the weekend and it's sole purpose was to rake the fence line (3 acres of it) and move manure piles (I made about I guess 60 loaders full). I rented a NH with a hyro but they delivered the wrong machine.

At least it had a the rake and the loader.

Interesting reading here! Amazing as it might be for some hydro sales vs the gear is roughly 3/4 hydro in under 50 horsepower. I think that says a lot here. I've seen peoples claims that they can loader as well with a gear drive as anyone can with a hydro! I'm glad I've been able to live as long as I have and I certainly hope to witness that act some day! I wonder how much wear between the tires and the clutch and the bucket pins of ramming to accomplish this feat would be! Most all major tractor companies have a version of hydro's coming out on the bigger farm tractors if they don't already. Twenty plus years ago it was thought that straight gear transmissions were all that was needed, then the power shift came out which is a hydraulic clutch pack for a clutch and the tractors became hydraulically shifted, IH introduced there hydro but for economics sake retained the two ranges they were using instead of going to a three or four range transmission. Now they have added more ranges in these bigger farm tractors and are offering the hydro to fit the unit to the conditions with the least amount of power loss. The industry is shifting fast to gain the flexibility of multi speeds and matching for conditions for the equipments longevity. Few modern farmers would want to go back to the old days of tractor operation and flexibility is a key to work efficiency and most business owners know and respect time enough to move ahead.

ART ... well said and to the point of intent in this thread. The gear-users and the "REAL machine operators" all tout their old technology and are immediately offended, hyper sensitive and over defensive when a contest erupts. These contests may get boring and repetitive but sometimes they garner a fresh viewpoint.

My case is an argument for technology growth and its trend and your post expresses what I may have failed.
