I went with something pretty similar. I use a cheap nano with a plastic/vinyl case on it. if it gets torn up, i'll get another one. I have debated using my iphone, but need a headphone adapter and i really don't want to tear it up.
On the bose headphones - get an extra cord. It is nice, it plugs in, etc. If you get the cord snagged on something - it comes loose.
It runs on a single AAA battery - forget the charge up Bose - too much of a pain.
Even if you don't want music, unhook the cord, turn them on and you have wonder hearing protection.
I have the over the ear type - much better protection.
